The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), has commenced the distribution of 50kg bags of rice to over one million vulnerable households across the state. This humanitarian intervention is part of a broader effort to cushion the effects of rising food prices and economic hardship confronting Nigerians.

The state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, flagged off the distribution in Alausa, Ikeja, emphasizing that the initiative is designed to reach all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across Lagos. Each beneficiary household is expected to receive a 50kg bag of rice through a structured distribution model handled by Community Development Associations (CDAs), traditional leaders, religious institutions, and various grassroots organizations.

Representing Aliko Dangote, Zouera Youssoufou, the Managing Director/CEO of ADF, noted that this partnership with Lagos State is part of the Foundation’s broader plan to distribute one million 10kg bags of rice across Nigeria during Ramadan. She stated that the Lagos collaboration allows for more efficient targeting of the most impacted communities, with emphasis on transparency and fairness in the distribution process.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the Dangote Foundation for its commitment to humanitarian causes and said the distribution aligns with the state’s “Eko Cares” programme, a social intervention strategy introduced to support the most affected residents.

The initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by the state government to stabilize food prices through various agricultural and social welfare programs. The rice distribution will complement other interventions such as food vouchers and discounted food markets, which have been rolled out to alleviate economic pressure on residents.

Beneficiaries across multiple LGAs have already begun receiving their share, and officials are monitoring the distribution to ensure equity and prevent hoarding.
