Nigeria and Spain have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish political and diplomatic consultations. The agreement, signed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and his Spanish counterpart, José Albares, aims to create a formal dialogue platform between both nations. This mechanism will enable both countries to discuss matters of mutual interest and strengthen their cooperation.

The MoU is part of Spain’s Africa 2025-2028 strategy, which seeks to deepen engagement with African nations. According to an official statement, the agreement will focus on enhancing collaboration in key areas such as economic development, security, education, energy, and climate change.

Over the years, Nigeria and Spain have maintained strong bilateral ties, particularly in trade. Spain remains one of Nigeria’s major trade partners, with a significant portion of its crude oil and gas exports going to the European nation. The new agreement is expected to boost trade and investment opportunities between both countries.

In January 2023, Nigeria and Spain reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their partnership in energy investments. Both nations discussed expanding cooperation in Nigeria’s gas sector to ensure a steady supply to the global energy market. The new agreement aligns with these commitments, providing a structured framework for discussions on energy and economic development.

Nigeria’s government has welcomed this agreement, describing it as a strategic move to deepen diplomatic relations and attract foreign investment. Analysts believe that formalizing political and diplomatic consultations with Spain could open new opportunities for Nigerian businesses and foster stronger international alliances.
