Telecommunications firm Cell C has unveiled a new strategy aimed at strengthening connectivity support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), warning that unreliable internet access is increasingly threatening business survival and operational stability across South Africa.

The company said its renewed SME-focused framework was informed by a market study conducted in partnership with research firm Kantar, which found that connectivity has evolved from a technical necessity into a core operational backbone for businesses.

According to the findings, SMEs now depend heavily on stable digital infrastructure for sales processing, customer bookings, payment systems, logistics coordination and workforce management. Many respondents described downtime not as an inconvenience but as a direct business disruption capable of halting revenue generation and damaging client trust.

Industry observers note that the challenge extends beyond SMEs to mid-sized companies and sector-specific enterprises whose daily operations rely on uninterrupted network access. Persistent infrastructure gaps, inconsistent internet service and rising operating costs have compounded concerns, with several business owners expressing anxiety over long-term sustainability if connectivity issues remain unresolved.

In response, Cell C Business said it has restructured its SME offerings around reliability, simplicity, predictable costs and direct customer support, positioning connectivity as a strategic growth enabler rather than a support function.

“SMEs cannot afford downtime, not even for a moment,” said Chris Lazarus, Chief Officer for Sales, Regions and Customer Care. He explained that business owners consistently demanded solutions that function reliably, remain easy to manage and come with accessible human assistance, prompting the company to redesign its services to align with those priorities.

The telecom provider added that its upgraded solutions are tailored to businesses of varying sizes and operational needs, ranging from small home offices to large multi-site enterprises. Packages include combinations of fibre connectivity, mobile voice and data services, cloud-based workforce tools, digital workflow systems and dedicated account management for large organisations.

Analysts say initiatives of this nature could prove critical for economic resilience, as SMEs remain a major contributor to employment and productivity. They argue that improved digital infrastructure will not only enhance business efficiency but also strengthen competitiveness, innovation and market expansion.

Cell C maintained that its strategy reflects a broader shift within the telecommunications sector, where service providers are increasingly designing enterprise solutions that directly address operational realities rather than offering generic connectivity products.

With digital dependence deepening across industries, stakeholders warn that sustained investment in reliable connectivity may determine which businesses thrive — and which struggle to remain operational — in an increasingly technology-driven economy.
