MTN Nigeria has entered into a landmark partnership with the Abia State Government aimed at speeding up digital transformation and expanding broadband access across the state. The agreement was officially sealed in Umuahia, the state capital, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that signals a major step towards improving technology access, boosting economic activity, and supporting innovation in the region.
The partnership was signed in the presence of the Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, and the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Dr. Karl Toriola, who led a team of top company executives to the event. The deal is expected to strengthen Abia’s ambition of becoming a digitally connected and innovation-led economy.
Under the agreement, MTN Nigeria will provide broad support in several areas of digital infrastructure and services. These include statewide expansion of 3G, 4G, and 5G network coverage, which will give residents access to faster and more reliable internet. MTN also promised to roll out affordable device financing for civil servants, making it easier for them to own smartphones and other digital tools.
Additionally, the company plans to provide cloud computing services that will help improve government operations and service delivery. Small businesses, especially traders and entrepreneurs in Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia and other commercial hubs, will benefit from digital storefronts and a special e-commerce platform built around the Aba brand. This platform is expected to enable local businesses to access global markets at no cost.
Governor Alex Otti described the move as a bold and timely step towards building a digital economy that supports innovation and job creation. He expressed his administration’s readiness to support the initiative, especially in key areas such as youth empowerment, good governance, and strengthening the state’s economic competitiveness.
“This partnership with MTN Nigeria is part of our broader plan to transform Abia into a modern economy driven by innovation and technology. We will do everything possible to make it succeed and create real benefits for our people,” Governor Otti said.
Dr. Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, said the company was proud to collaborate with Abia State in driving inclusive digital growth. “At MTN, we are guided by the belief that everyone deserves the benefits of a modern connected life. This partnership with Abia State is a bold step towards delivering that vision by combining infrastructure, innovation, and collaboration to build a more efficient and empowered society,” he said.
Other MTN Nigeria executives present at the signing included Mrs. Lynda Saint-Nwafor, Chief Enterprise Business Officer; Mr. Shoyinka Shodunke, Chief Information Officer; and Mr. Omotayo Ojutalayo, General Manager of Enterprise Business Development.
This collaboration is expected to have long-term impact on the economy of Abia State by promoting digital literacy, easing business operations, and making technology more accessible to the people. It also aligns with MTN Nigeria’s broader mission of connecting more Nigerians and supporting national development through technology.
