Cassava Technologies has partnered with Nvidia to launch Africa’s first artificial intelligence (AI) factory, a move set to transform digital infrastructure on the continent. The company, founded by Zimbabwean entrepreneur Strive Masiyiwa, will roll out Nvidia’s AI software at its data centers in South Africa by June. Once fully operational, the AI-driven services will expand to Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and Morocco.
Cassava Technologies, a UK-headquartered firm, owns a 60,000-mile fiber optic network and operates renewable energy and data center services across Africa. The company’s decision to partner with Nvidia, the world’s leading chipmaker, aligns with its goal to boost AI-powered computing for African businesses and industries. This initiative is expected to significantly improve data processing capabilities, enhance automation, and support the growing tech ecosystem in Africa.
This development comes months after Cassava secured a $90 million equity investment from the US International Development Finance Corporation, Google, and Finnish investment firm Finnfund. The funding was aimed at strengthening digital infrastructure across the continent, positioning Africa as a major player in the global AI industry.
Industry experts believe that Africa’s AI adoption is critical to economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement. With AI factories, companies can leverage machine learning and data analytics to improve efficiency in sectors such as healthcare, finance, and agriculture. The partnership with Nvidia will provide Africa with access to advanced computing technology, fostering local innovation and increasing global competitiveness.
However, some analysts have raised concerns about the sustainability of AI in Africa, citing infrastructure challenges, high electricity costs, and limited access to high-performance computing resources. Cassava Technologies has assured stakeholders that its renewable energy projects will help mitigate some of these challenges by ensuring stable and cost-effective power for AI operations.
