Champion Breweries Bounces Back with N2.29bn Profit in First Half of 2025

Champion Breweries Plc has returned to profitability in the first half of 2025, posting a profit after tax of ₦2.29 billion. This marks a major turnaround from the ₦386.66 million loss recorded in the same period of 2024. The company’s performance reflects stronger sales, better cost management, and the absence of forex-related losses that weighed down its results last year.

According to its unaudited financial statement for the six-month period ending June 30, 2025, Champion Breweries reported a 67 per cent rise in revenue. The company’s total revenue stood at ₦15.93 billion, up from ₦9.54 billion in the corresponding period of 2024. This shows that consumer demand for its products has improved significantly within one year.

Gross profit rose by 111 per cent to ₦7.89 billion in the first half of 2025, compared to ₦3.73 billion in the same period of 2024. This impressive result was made possible by higher sales and better management of production costs. The company’s cost of sales rose by 38 per cent to ₦8.05 billion, up from ₦5.81 billion recorded last year, showing that the cost increase was slower than the revenue growth.

Operating profit also witnessed a sharp rise of over 552 per cent, increasing from ₦591.94 million in the first half of 2024 to ₦3.86 billion in 2025. This shows that the brewery has become more efficient in managing its operations. Finance income for the period reached ₦139.97 million, while finance costs jumped to ₦543.70 million, compared to only ₦14.20 million in the previous year. Even with this increase in finance costs, the company was still able to record a profit, largely because it did not suffer from any foreign exchange loss this time around.

Last year, Champion Breweries had a foreign exchange loss of ₦910.74 million in the first half of the year, which heavily affected its bottom line. This year, with no such losses, the brewery was able to stay firmly in the black. The total comprehensive income for the period stood at ₦2.29 billion, and the company’s earnings per share moved from a negative 4.94 kobo in 2024 to 25.57 kobo in 2025.

Champion Breweries also recorded growth in its balance sheet. As of June 30, 2025, the company’s total assets had risen to ₦25.95 billion, compared to ₦21.35 billion as of December 31, 2024. Retained earnings grew to ₦5.63 billion from ₦3.88 billion, reflecting improved financial health.

The company has not disclosed specific details about its product performance or market share gains during the period, but analysts say the numbers suggest a more stable operating environment and improved consumer confidence in the brand.

Champion Breweries Plc, which is based in Akwa Ibom State, is one of the key players in Nigeria’s brewing industry. The company is known for producing Champion Lager Beer and other beverages. In recent years, it has faced stiff competition from bigger rivals like Nigerian Breweries Plc and International Breweries Plc, but the latest result shows it is finding its feet again.

The first half of 2025 has also seen other companies in Nigeria’s manufacturing and consumer goods sector record better results. For instance, Presco Plc reported 128 per cent revenue growth to ₦88.7 billion, while SAHCO recorded a 131 per cent surge in second-quarter profit. However, not all firms are doing well, as UAC Nigeria Plc’s profit fell to ₦7.36 billion in the same period.

Champion Breweries’ return to profit is expected to boost investor confidence and improve the company’s standing in the capital market. It may also put it in a stronger position to invest in capacity expansion, marketing, or new product lines as it competes in the dynamic Nigerian beverage market.
