The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted a significant shipment of illicit pharmaceuticals and other contraband goods valued at approximately N3.2 billion. The seizure, which occurred at the Lagos Port Complex, was the result of a coordinated enforcement operation involving both national and international security agencies.

According to the Customs Area Comptroller, Dr. Babatunde Olomu, the intercepted shipment consisted of six containers containing various prohibited items. Among the seized goods were 1,698 cartons of RTPL CSC cough syrup with codeine, concealed within 202 packages of water closets, and 1,690 cartons of codeine syrup hidden inside toilet seats. Additionally, another container was found to contain 1,584 packages of Globatin anti-marks and 30g Clobetasol cream, falsely declared as truck tyres. Other items seized included cosmetics, used clothing, and two vehicles that had been illegally imported into the country.

Dr. Olomu emphasized that the NCS is committed to facilitating legitimate trade and collecting revenue for the government. However, he stressed that the service also has a duty to protect the Nigerian public from harmful imports that could jeopardize their health and well-being. He noted that the successful interception was made possible through international collaboration and local intelligence sharing with agencies such as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

In connection with the seizures, three individuals have been arrested and are currently undergoing interrogation. The NCS has assured that further investigations are underway to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the illegal importation activities.

Dr. Olomu also highlighted the NCS’s impressive revenue performance, revealing that the Apapa Command had generated a total of N1.094 trillion in revenue as of May 21, 2025. This achievement underscores the command’s commitment to enhancing trade facilitation while ensuring strict enforcement of customs regulations.

The NCS has reiterated its warning to individuals and groups engaged in smuggling activities, urging them to desist from such unlawful practices. The service remains resolute in its mission to safeguard the nation’s borders and protect the health and safety of its citizens.
