Reports have it that on Monday afternoon, a fatality occurred at Harmony Gold Kusasalethu mine near Carletonville which was caused by an engineering-related incident.
The accident occurred a month after workers had lost their lives at the same mine as a result of mudslide. Authorities have been informed of Monday’s incident with an investigation being on the way.
Harmony said a safety day was held at Kusasalethu on Tuesday where safety messages were reinforced and the importance of the miners’ safety and accountability values were emphasized.
“We are deeply saddened and very concerned by the frequency of incidents particularly at this mine, it is unacceptable, Our heartfelt condolences go out to those impacted by this loss of life.” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

Harmony CEO Peter Steenkamp said “Our priority at this stage is to support the families, colleagues and friends impacted by this tragedy and to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the reason for yet another incident, Our heartfelt condolences goes out to those impacted by this loss of life.”
