Two restaurants in South Africa have been ranked, Cape town’s La Colombe and Wolfgat on the West Coast have again been rated among the world’s top 100. The organizers of the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurant List on Wednesday published their rankings of the number 51-100 placed top restaurants later this month. More than 1,000 culinary experts vote on the awards, which were first launched 20 years ago.
From 81st place in 2021, La Colombe was ranked number 56 on the list. The organizers of the awards noted that the restaurant has a treehouse-like setting, with a large glass ceiling that allows light to stream in. The dining room is minimalist and muted, allowing James Gaag’s theatrical dishes to sing.
“Smoked tomato, aubergine and pine nut, and petit poussin with crayfish and miso corn are stalwarts on the Chef’s Experience multi-course menu.”
On the other hand, after being ranked 50th in 2021, Wolfgat the 20-seater restaurant in Paternoster was ranked 90th.
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022 will be announced in London on 18 July.
The organizers also said, “Chef Kobus van der Merwe’s restaurant in beautiful coastal Paternoster in South Africa serves a seven-course menu built on local indigenous ingredients in dishes inspired by the surrounding landscape.”
