Morocco’s UM6P-Al Moutmir Program plans to Expand it’s offer to Over 25,000 Hectares

The UM6P-Al Moutmir direct seeding program plans to extend its offer to cover over 25,000 hectares for the 2022-2023 agricultural season in Morocco.

The initiative is part of the program’s contribution to Morocco’s national program seeking to promote direct seeding, a statement from the OCP Group said on Monday.

With the intention to reach more than 125 localities across 23 provinces, the program is at the heart of a collaboration with the Ministry of Culture. Other institutional partners to the initiative include the Regional Directorate of Agriculture, the National Institute of Agronomic Research, and the National Office of Agricultural Advice.

“Seed drills are made available to more than 50 professional agricultural organizations (cooperatives, associations, economic interest groups, etc.) in 23 provinces in different regions of the Kingdom,” OCP stated. 

Under the program, farmers will benefit from close monitoring by the Al Moutmir teams. Training programs on the choice of varieties in cereal growing and the adjustment of seed drills are also part of the strategy.

As part of the Al Moutmir program, beneficiaries will have access to soil analysis and recommendations necessary for rational fertilization use.

“The initiative has set up a system for monitoring changes in the rate of organic matter in the soil of plots conducted using direct seeding,” the OCP Group said, emphasizing that this device is set to evaluate the effect of the adoption of direct seeding on the physico-chemical characteristics of the soil.

 In addition, over 1,030 direct seeding demonstration platforms will be installed and monitored in collaboration with the various partners.

The program is targeting high-potential crops such as oil seeds, and fodder crops aimed at rearing livestock, in addition to focusing on cereals and vegetables during the 2022-2023 agricultural season. The program is part of national initiatives seeking to contribute to reviving the agricultural sector.

Agriculture, one of the pillars in Morocco’s economy, has been severely impacted by inflation and drought. The North African country has been facing the most severe drought in three decades. The lack of downpours and drought caused a significant drop in cereal production in the agricultural season in 2021-2022.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Morocco’s cereal production in the previous season fell by 67% compared to a season earlier. The country produced 34 million quintals of cereals in the 2021-22 season, compared to 103.2 million quintals in the 2020-2021 agricultural year.

St. Vincent and Grenadines to welcome 500 tones of Moroccan fertilizers in 2023

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines expect to welcome 500 tones of Moroccan fertilizers in 2023, according to Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves.

The shipment reflects growing cooperation between Rabat and Kingstown in key sectors such as education, agriculture, and trade. The two countries are currently developing “a roadmap for relations over the next three to five years,” Gonsalves told local media on Thursday.

“Once we finalize this with the Moroccans, no farmer would be spending money on fertilizer next year,” the PM explained, adding that the shipment is in addition to 40,000 sacks of Venezuelan urea that are set to provide a “big boost” to national agriculture.

A delegation of Moroccan officials visited St Vincent and the Grenadines this week to further cooperation with the south Caribbean nation. The trip included meetings with Gonsalves and members of the Cabinet.

The meetings reviewed Rabat-Kingstown cooperation in numerous sectors including agriculture and education.

According to the Vincentian PM, Morocco is providing technical assistance to the country with regard to soil fertility testing, “The Moroccans are here already doing some soil fertility testing, we need to ramp that up so that the farmers feel the impact of that technical work.”

In addition, the Gonsalves government is holding negotiations with the Moroccan delegation to replace partial scholarships with fully-funded ones with the goal of covering the education of up to 20 students for 2023.

The scholarships are likely to strengthen ties between the two nations that currently hold similar views on regional and international issues such as the Western Sahara dispute.

In March, Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit inaugurated a consulate in Dakhla on behalf of six Eastern Caribbean countries including Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint-Kitts and Nevis, Saint-Lucia, and Saint-Vincent and the Grenadines. 

The diplomatic move reaffirmed the countries’ support of the Moroccan stance on the Western Sahara dispute and provided them with a “very significant and promising diplomatic presence” in Morocco.

FAO Scales Up Procurement Of Fertilizers In Northern Ethiopia To defeat hunger

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations disclosed that it is scaling up the urgent procurement of fertilizers to help farmers in northern Ethiopia sow their fields in the midst of the critical planting season.

The FAO, in a press statement issued late Monday, said the urgent procurement of fertilizers is underway with the help of a 10 million-U.S.-dollar loan recently approved by the United Nations’ Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

The loan, which forms part of resource partners’ commitments, is helping the FAO to accelerate the procurement and delivery of crucial agricultural inputs to Ethiopia’s conflict-affected northernmost Tigray region, particularly fertilizers, which must be delivered and applied by end of August 2022, read the statement.

It said the provision of fertilizer will help restore the productive capacity of farmers in the region, where there has been widespread disruption of agricultural activities, elevated levels of acute food insecurity, and loss of livelihoods since November 2020.

According to the FAO, if farmers receive the inputs they need, they will be able to harvest and begin consuming the produce from October 2022.

Agriculture is the main source of livelihoods for up to 80 percent of Ethiopians, especially those living in rural areas, and their produce feeds the nation.

The FAO said with the rainfall performing well and the outlook foreseen to be favorable, the season offers a crucial and cost-effective opportunity to improve food production and food availability across the Tigray region.

The FAO and partners have so far procured just more than 19,000 tones of fertilizer (about 40 percent of requirements), enough to meet the fertilizer needs of approximately 380,000 households. The first batch of more than 7,000 tones has already been distributed to farmers in Tigray, it said.
