MultiChoice Group offers an attractive investment opportunity at current levels says FNB

FNB Stockbroking and Portfolio Management said MultiChoice Group offers an attractive investment opportunity at current levels.

They recommend a long position in MultiChoice with an upside target price of R153 and a stop-loss at R111.

MultiChoice is the dominant pay-TV operator in Africa and offers a range of entertainment services, including DStv, ShowMax, and betting service KingMakers.

Apart from stakes in MultiChoice South Africa and MultiChoice Africa, the group also owns the technology platform Irdeto.

MultiChoice Group’s three content pillars — international, local, and sport — continue to hold a competitive advantage even as competition continues to rise.

Commenting on the technical analysis of the MultiChoice share price, FNB said MultiChoice’s share price remains in a symmetrical triangle pattern.

As such, it makes the share attractive as an investment opportunity. “While the triangle is neutral, it still favors the direction of the existing trend. The expectation is for the price action to progress to the upper range of this pattern,” FNB said.

“According to the RSI (relative strength index), the share will be overbought at R175, making our profit target of R153 realistic.”

“Still, the trade idea is regarded as a counter-trend trade since the price remains below its 200-day simple moving average of R122.”

FNB Stockbroking and Portfolio Management suggested a low capital-at-risk allocation to this trade. This article was first published by Daily Investor and is republished with permission.

DStv to launch a new BBC UKTV channel on it’s satellite TV service

MultiChoice will launch a new channel called BBC UKTV on its satellite TV service DStv in mid-December, allowing customers access to various natural history, comedy, soap, and children’s shows.

The broadcaster said the new channel would be available on channel 134 for DStv Family, Access, and EasyView subscribers from Thursday, 15 December 2022.

“We have strengthened our partnerships, which has in turn strengthened our content offering, therefore, we are extremely excited to introduce BBC UKTV to our viewers,” MultiChoice’s executive head of general entertainment channels, Georginah Machiridza, said.

The addition of BBC UKTV marks the sixth BBC Studio channel made available on DStv, adding to its BBC Earth, BBC Brit, BBC Lifestyle, CBeebies, and BBC World News channels.

It will broadcast shows including the long-running sitcom My Family, the British hospital-based soap Doctors, and Top Gear.

My Family will run on weekdays at 06:00 and 19:30, starting from season one, and season 22 of Doctors will air at 19:00 during the week.

Starting with season 19, BBC UKTV will broadcast Top Gear at 20:00 during the week and again at 18:30 on Sundays.

Viewers can also watch various BBC natural history shows every day at 09:00 and on weekdays at 15:00. Children’s programming for ages 0 to 12 will air every morning between 06:30 and 09:00.

DStv’s existing collection of BBC Studios channels will continue to run new programming, including Strictly Come Dancing, Frozen Planet II, Come Dine With Me South Africa, and Homegrown Tastes South Africa. Curiously, Openview announced that it would ADD BCC UKTV to its channel catalogue on 18 October 2022.

However, the eMedia-owned broadcaster postponed the launch at the last minute. “We confirm that we planned to launch the BBC UKTV channel on Openview on 18 October,” Openview told MyBroadband.

“We are disappointed to announce that the much-anticipated launch had to be postponed. We are working on finalizing details for the channel.”

Multichoice hits financial trouble

MultiChoice has issued a trading statement warning shareholders that it expects to report a net loss in its interim financial results on Thursday.

Last year the company announced earnings per share of R3.17 during the six months between 1 April and 30 September.

This year it expects it to be between R3.71 and R3.87 lower. That’s to say, swing from a net profit to a loss per share of between R0.54 and R0.64.

Similarly, MultiChoice’s headline earnings per share are also expected to take a tumble by between R4.06 and R4.20 from R3.56.

Trading profit is expected to be between 0% and 5% (R0.3bn) higher than the R6.0 billion reported last year.

Excluding mergers and acquisitions and foreign exchange losses, this improves to an increase of between 2% (R0.1bn) and 7% (R0.4bn) higher..

“The board considers trading profit and core headline earnings per share as the two most appropriate indicators of the operating performance of the group, as they adjust for non-recurring and non-operational items,” MultiChoice stated.

It attributed the reduction in earnings and headline earnings per share to higher unrealised foreign exchange losses.

These stem from the translation of MultiChoice’s dollar-denominated liabilities — including satellite transponder leases — and the US dollar’s strength against the South African rand.

“This is further impacted by an increase in foreign exchange losses associated with the repatriation of cash from Nigeria at the parallel rate,” said MultiChoice.

“These exchange losses are considered to be of a temporary nature,” it assured.

MultiChoice’s shares on the JSE were trading 0.57% lower than when it started the day. They are down 2.9% over the past five days, down 6.2% over the past six months, and 2.6% lower year to date.

At the time of publication, MultiChoice was trading at R117.91 per share down from R120.35 at the start of the day.

MultiChoice announces launch of Black Friday deals

MultiChoice has launched a Black Friday offer on one of its DStv Internet packages, giving customers 150GB of additional data over three months at no extra cost.

For the month of November, DStv is offering its 50GB Internet Compact bundle at R499 per month with double the data for the first three months.

The bundle includes a DStv Compact subscription, which costs R429 per month on its own (R409 on a 24-month contract).

DStv Internet’s Compact bundle normally comes with 50GB of fixed-LTE data, split into 25GB of anytime data and 25GB night-time data.

During the first three months of the promotion, customers will receive 50GB of anytime data and 50GB night-time data.

Night-time data is valid between midnight and 05:00 daily.

The Black Friday offer includes a DStv-branded router with free delivery.

Some caveats with DStv’s Black Friday offer

Importantly, the deal is only available on a 24-month contract.

While a DStv Compact subscription forms part of the package, there is no mention of a decoder being included.

Customers who don’t have a decoder yet will have to use DStv streaming, which will consume their data.

Alternatively, an entry-level DStv HD 8S decoder with installation will cost another R499, for those who wish to use their data for other purposes.

Another option for those with fibre coverage is one of DStv’s recently-launched fibre bundles.

That comes with 25Mbps uncapped fibre, a Compact subscription, and DStv Streama box for R200 more per month than DStv’s latest Black Friday offer.

MultiChoice acquires its first non-entertainment business

MultiChoice has acquired its first non-entertainment business, emergency response app Namola, which offers users a platform to rapidly share their location with emergency responders.

Once dubbed the ‘Uber for police’, the app was developed by Craig Rivett and initially piloted in Pretoria in 2015 before going national in 2017. The move by the group to bulk up its value proposition comes amid pressure from a surge in new streaming services, while elevated inflation and rising interest rates have been cutting into the spending power of its market.

“Namola is part of our strategy to expand our ecosystem beyond entertainment and to offer a suite of consumer services that meet the needs of our customers,” Nyiko Shiburi, CEO of MultiChoice SA says.

Namola sends an alert to the police control room with the user’s GPS coordinates, and the system locates the closest station to respond to the scene.

Users get access to crime, fire, accident, medical and sensitive emergency services and DStv customers can add the Namola subscription to their monthly DStv bill.

Namola’s addition to the business stable of the JSE-listed pay-TV operator is one of several developments unveiled by the company during its annual showcase on Thursday evening.

The company said it was “evolving its offering to deliver value to its customers, beyond video entertainment”.

“It is about offering an integrated digital ecosystem where customers can access a suite of services that meet their unique needs.”

DStv will debut its digital box next month, DStv Streama, as it slashes prices of its streaming packages on its platform by as much as 17%.

The launch of the streaming device, which  had been delayed by supply challenges including the shortage chips, offers services streaming services such as Showmax, Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, YouTube and YouTube Kids in one platform.

The Streama device is part of MultiChoice’s move of becoming a super aggregator of content as the market embraces streaming services which are dominated by international companies. Unlike the regular DStv service, the new device does not require a satellite dish, just an internet connection.

“Although we continue to invest significantly in our video entertainment business, we are also targeting select segments that are adjacent to our core business,” says Calvo Mawela, MultiChoice Group Chief Executive.

DStv Streams will be available from 1 October. DStv has seen a decline in its Premium subscriber count as competition heats up and consumers rethink their monthly spending patterns.

From March 2021 to March 2022, DStv 90-day active premium subscribers dipped 4%, from the 8% reported in the previous reporting segment.

MultiChoice partners with Sky to launch Glass Tv in South Africa

MultiChoice has announced a partnership with Sky, which will see the South African broadcaster sell its “Sky Glass” TV range from 2023.

In the UK, the Sky Glass TV comes with a QLED panel and packs built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for streaming Sky TV and streaming apps.

The smart TV will come with the DStv app built in.

Sky and MultiChoice’s agreement followed Sky Glass’ launch in the UK in 2021, then Ireland and Italy in 2022.

MultiChoice is Sky’s second Glass syndication partner following its partnership with Australian pay television company Foxtel, announced last year.

The Sky Glass TV range features 4K QLED displays with an integrated Dolby Atmos-supporting sound bar and will be available in various sizes and colours in South Africa.

“Glass offers a world-class streaming aggregation product that will include the collation and search functionality across (MultiChoce Group’s) own content and third-party apps,” MultiChoice said in a statement.

It also features voice search to help viewers find the content they want to watch as easily as possible.

“We are truly excited about the syndication partnership with Sky and Comcast, and what it means for our customers,” MultiChoice Group CEO Calvo Mawela said.

“We understand that providing world-leading content must come through an exceptional customer experience.”

“This syndication partnership highlights our drive to put the needs of customers at the core of what we do, through both the bolstering of the customers viewing experience as well as demand for streaming aggregation,” he added.

EVP and CEO for new markets and businesses at Sky Andrea Zappia said Sky is thrilled to partner with MultiChoice to launch its Glass TV product in South Africa.

“Glass is a world-class content and app aggregation platform that makes finding content easy, with voice search and intelligent recommendations,” he added.

France’s Canal+ doubles stake in MultiChoice in a year

Canal+, a unit of France’s $9.7 billion Vivendi SE, has been speeding up its acquisition of shares in South African television and entertainment company MultiChoice Group, with its stake having risen to 26.26% from 15.37% a year ago

Canal+ bought 6.5% of MultiChoice in October of 2020 and within the same month almost doubled that to 12%, sparking talk of a buyout. While MultiChoice rallied on the speculation, it said it had begun a collaboration with Canal+ on co-productions that would help with sharing costs.

Two years later and it’s again unclear what Vivendi’s intentions might be. Canal+ increased its stake to 20.12% in July and has twice now added more stock to its holdings in a company that has more than 76% of its shares in free float, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

If Canal+ were to buy 35% or more of MutliChoice’s shares, it would trigger a mandatory offer to shareholders.

Competition Appeal Court orders DStv to reinstate four dropped E-tv channels

The Competition Appeal Court has ruled that MultiChoice must reinstate four eMedia channels on the DStv platform after cutting them at the beginning of June.

This comes after the Competition Tribunal initially ruled in favour of Multichoice, saying that eMedia’s complaint does not meet the requirements for exclusionary conduct.

emedia complained to the competition commission after MultiChoice refused to renew its channel supply agreement for E-tv Extra, eToonz, eMovies, and eMovies Extra.

DStv still offers E-tv and eNCA but declined to renew the other four channels.

According to eMedia, MultiChoice’s decision amounted to a dominant player refusing to supply a scarce service.

The company said it would lose as much as 19% of its advertising revenue should the channels be suspended.

MultiChoice disputed this argument, saying that E-tv can broadcast the channels online, on South Africa’s digital terrestrial television platform, and eMedia’s own satellite platform Openview.

The pay-TV broadcaster said it cut eMedia’s channels to make space for new ones.

MultiChoice said DStv only has space for 11 channels in the next five years — four channels on IS–20 and ten on IS–36. And that’s after it cut eMedia’s four channels.

After the Competition Tribunal ruled against eMedia, it took the matter to the Competition Appeal Court.

The Competition Court has ruled that MultiChoice must reinstate eMedia’s channels while the Competition Commission conducts an investigation.

MyBroadband contacted eMedia and MultiChoice for comment on the ruling.

“We are aware of the decision made by the Competition Appeal Court in favour of eMedia,” a MultiChoice spokesperson told MyBroadband.

“We are considering the court’s decision to grant the order requiring us to carry the four eMedia channels for a limited period of six months while the Competition Commission conducts its investigation,” the company said.

“We will continue to cooperate with the investigation.”

eMedia did not respond by the time of publication.

MultiChoice file contempt suit against Jamii Telecom over piracy sites

MultiChoice Kenya on Saturday filed contempt of court proceedings after Jamii Telecom Limited defied High Court orders to block 141 sports pirating websites.

Despite being granted 72 business hours, up from the initial 48 business hours, by court to comply with the take down notices, Jamii Telecom Limited is yet to comply with the court orders.

It filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal at the same time seeking a stay against the orders of the High Court. The Court of Appeal declined to certify their application for stay urgent.

On June 23, 2022, Hon. Justice Wilfrida Okwany made a finding that MultiChoice Kenya had lawfully issued valid takedown notices to two ISPs, and they ought to have complied with the same.

She further found that the two organizations had not given any lawful excuse for their failure to comply with the takedown notices.

The High Court of Kenya confirmed a permanent injunction compelling internet service providers (ISPs) to block sports pirate websites infringing on copyrighted material.

MultiChoice Kenya Managing Director Nancy Matimu expressed her disappointment at the leading telco’s blatant failure to comply with the court order.

“The Kenyan law has sent a clear message that we respect the right of content creators to earn a living from their work,” said Nancy.

The Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) and the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) were interested parties in the suit. Representatives of civil-society copyright bodies, which work to fight content piracy and protect intellectual property, have welcomed the verdict.

“We have been fighting for years to ensure that there are legal copyright protections, and that those protections are enforced.

The court has reaffirmed the stance of the law that copyright must be protected,” added Nancy.

MultiChoice and Safaricom are currently in talks and are working together towards compliance of the court order.

Court orders MultiChoice, DSTV to share content with rival

MultiChoice, the parent company of subscription-based cable tv, DSTV and GOTV, has been ordered by the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to share its contents with rival, Metro Digital Limited.

Metro Digital Limited, a local paytv, had filed a suit against MultiChoice in a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, after the South African entertainment company rejected a request from the former to sublicense channels and programmes to Metro Digital.

MultiChoice claimed that it can’t share the license to the programmes requested by Metro Digital because it doesn’t own them, unlike shows owned by the South African company.

In response, Metrol Digital filed a case against MultiChoice in the high court last year, to compel the latter into sharing the requested programmes, however, the court ruled against the plaintiff.

The case was taken to the appeal court, and on Wednesday, Judge Olabode Adegbehingbe supported the suit of Metro Digital, ordering MultiChoice to sublicense the channels within 21 days, under the supervision of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

Recall that the NBC had amended the broadcasting code to break the monopoly in the cable tv market, increasing rights to a programme, and eliminating exclusivity to a show.

The NBC code is meant to increase the number of players in the paytv, and allow competition, considering several Nigerian-owned cable tv companies have shutdown due to MultiChoice monopoly on customer-driven programmes.
