Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s Husband Dies During Treatment

by Radarr Africa

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, announced Hassan’s death on Monday and conveyed his condolences to the president and her family.

Hassan became Tanzania’s first gentleman in 2021 after his wife assumed office as the country’s first female president following the death of President John Magufuli.

He had reportedly been undergoing treatment for a heart condition before his death.

Ndejembi said arrangements were underway for Hassan’s burial in Zanzibar, the semi-autonomous archipelago that is part of Tanzania and the family’s ancestral home.

The election was disputed, while candidates from Tanzania’s two major opposition parties were prevented from contesting.
