The United Kingdom’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to begin his new diplomatic assignment.
Vowles takes over from Richard Montgomery, who previously served as the United Kingdom’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.
His arrival was announced in a statement issued on Monday by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission.
Expressing his excitement about beginning his new role, Vowles said his immediate priority would be to understand Nigeria better by engaging with its people, travelling across the country and experiencing its diverse culture.
“I am hugely excited to be in Nigeria. My first priority is to listen and learn – to travel, meet people and immerse myself in this extraordinary country, its culture and its energy,” Vowles said.
He described the relationship between the UK and Nigeria as one built strongly on people-to-people connections and said he was eager to work with stakeholders across the country to further strengthen bilateral ties.
“The UK and Nigeria have a deep and enduring partnership, built above all on the connections between our people. I’m looking forward to discovering Nigeria for myself and working with partners across the country to build on that relationship and see what more we can achieve together,” he said.
Vowles Brings Extensive Diplomatic Experience
Vowles was announced as the United Kingdom’s next High Commissioner to Nigeria on June 16, 2026, bringing extensive diplomatic, foreign policy and development experience to the role.
Before his new appointment, he served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe. He has also held several senior positions within the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
His previous diplomatic assignments include serving as Britain’s Ambassador to Myanmar, as well as holding diplomatic and development positions in Bangladesh, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya.
His experience across Africa and Asia is expected to support his engagement with Nigeria as he begins his tenure.
UK-Nigeria Relations
Vowles’ arrival comes at a time when Nigeria and the United Kingdom continue to maintain longstanding ties across several areas, including diplomacy, trade, investment, security and development.
The two countries also share strong people-to-people links through Nigeria’s large diaspora community in the UK.
As he begins his assignment, Vowles is expected to engage with government officials, businesses, civil society organisations and other stakeholders as both countries seek to deepen their longstanding partnership.
