Flags were raised outside the United Nations headquarters in New York on Monday ahead of the annual UN General Assembly, where world leaders are set to gather for high-level discussions.
Security was heightened around the venue, with police officers, canine units and surveillance drones deployed as preparations continued for the meeting, which officially begins on Tuesday.
A key focus for African leaders this year is the African Union’s push for a stronger role in global governance, including permanent African representation on the UN Security Council.
Ahead of the gathering, leaders of the African Union and the United Nations met to discuss reforms to international financial institutions, debt sustainability and ways to ensure Africa gains greater value from its mineral resources.
Kenyan President William Ruto is also expected to use the platform to advocate for climate finance, global governance reform, peace and security, as well as digital cooperation.
In addition, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is set to unveil an Africa-focused package aimed at supporting artificial intelligence development, resource management, data capabilities, talent growth and improved access to capital across the continent.
