The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals IPO has sparked excitement among Nigerians, with social media users turning the investment opportunity into a wave of jokes about becoming business partners with billionaire Aliko Dangote.

Since the public offer opened on September 14, Nigerians have been sharing screenshots of their subscriptions online and joking about what it means to own a small stake in one of Africa’s biggest industrial projects.

One of the recurring jokes online is, “Now I can call my business partner Dangote,” as new investors celebrate their entry into the refinery’s shareholder base.

X user Johnterry (@IamJT_24), for instance, joked about how he and a friend felt after using their “last 10k” to purchase shares.

Another investor, Iveomachukwu (@iphy_chidozie), extended the joke by suggesting that Dangote should host investors because “we need to know how well OUR company is performing as major shareholders.”

The humour has also spilled into conversations about the refinery’s daily operations.

Emmanuel Odogwu (@the_agentmanuel) joked about arriving at the refinery and finding “my staff” relaxing, while Jobs with Aramide (@AramideOyekunle) said she would need to contact her “business partner Dangote” after seeing a Dangote truck driver allegedly misbehave.

Beyond the jokes, the reactions show how the IPO has changed the way some Nigerians view the refinery. Rather than simply being consumers of products from the Dangote Group, investors can now potentially own a small financial stake in the business.

Strong interest from retail investors

The excitement has not been limited to social media.

Several digital investment platforms experienced increased traffic after the IPO opened, as investors rushed to subscribe. Some platforms reportedly experienced access difficulties amid the surge in interest.

The Dangote Refinery IPO consists of 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each. Investors can subscribe for a minimum of 10 shares, meaning participation starts from ₦5,250.

If fully subscribed, the offer is expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion.

The relatively low minimum investment has helped attract retail investors, including people participating in the capital market for the first time.

Nigerians debate the IPO online

The enthusiasm has also generated different opinions about the public offer.

While some investors are excited about owning shares in the refinery, others have questioned the level of excitement surrounding the offer and the expectations attached to it.

One social media user, @AdeolaJose, responded to the discussion by saying, “I bought 10 units already.”

The online reactions have therefore combined investment discussions with humour, as Nigerians imagine what their new shareholder status means.

For some investors, however, the excitement goes beyond the jokes. They have subscribed because they want to own a small stake in the refinery and potentially benefit from the company’s future performance.

The IPO is scheduled to remain open until October 13, 2026.
