Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has condemned the reported obstruction of Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State, saying such an incident should not be allowed in a democracy.
Keyamo Reacts to Obi’s Blocked Convoy
Keyamo reacted after Obi’s convoy was stopped by youths while traveling along the Makurdi-Gboko road towards Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area.
Obi was reportedly heading to the community to sympathise with families affected by the 2025 killings, which claimed more than 270 lives.
The former Anambra State governor said his convoy was blocked by people chanting that he should return, forcing him to abandon the visit.
Minister Condemns Political Obstruction
Reacting to the development, Keyamo described the incident as unacceptable and stressed the importance of allowing political actors to move freely.
He said disagreement among politicians should not translate into actions that restrict the movement of political opponents or interfere with democratic activities.
The minister’s reaction comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Benue Government Denies Involvement
The Benue State Government has denied allegations that it was responsible for the obstruction.
The government said it had no knowledge of Obi’s visit and rejected claims that Governor Hyacinth Alia or his administration deployed people to stop the NDC presidential candidate.
It also maintained that recognised security agencies, rather than political actors, would handle any security concerns involving Obi or other political figures.
Police Begin Investigation
The Benue State Police Command confirmed that Obi’s convoy was stopped and said an investigation was underway to establish what happened.
The incident has continued to generate reactions from political figures and groups, with calls for those responsible to be identified.
The NDC has also condemned the obstruction and demanded an investigation into the incident.
