The Lagos State Government has intensified safety, health and security measures across schools ahead of the resumption of pupils and students for the 2026/2027 academic session.
Public primary and secondary schools across the state are scheduled to resume on Monday, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, urged school communities to remain alert and take necessary steps to protect learners and staff.
The statement was issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Basirat Lawal.
Alli-Balogun said the state government remained committed to protecting the safety and wellbeing of children, while calling on parents, teachers, school administrators and other stakeholders to make safety and health a shared responsibility.
He urged members of school communities to promptly report security threats, unsafe conditions, damaged infrastructure and health concerns to the appropriate authorities.
Lagos Schools Told to Maintain Hygiene Standards
The commissioner also directed schools to maintain clean, safe and conducive learning environments.
He specifically stressed the importance of functional water supply, proper sanitation and adequate hygiene facilities to protect both learners and members of staff.
“The new session provides another opportunity to strengthen learning, discipline, character development, innovation and excellence across schools through shared commitment and collective responsibility,” he added.
Alli-Balogun also encouraged pupils and students to maintain good personal hygiene by washing their hands regularly, avoiding littering, practising proper respiratory hygiene and disposing of waste responsibly.
He advised learners against sharing personal items and called on schools to ensure classrooms are properly ventilated and frequently touched surfaces are cleaned regularly.
“Teachers, administrators and non-teaching staff are expected to lead by example by maintaining high standards of personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness and safety,” he said.
Model Colleges to Resume Sunday
The Lagos State Government also announced that its model colleges are expected to resume on Sunday.
The commissioner urged school communities to cooperate with school authorities and promptly report any situation that could threaten the safety, health or wellbeing of learners and school personnel.
The renewed safety measures are part of efforts by the Lagos government to ensure a secure and healthy learning environment as schools begin the new academic session.
