The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has taken a major step towards acquiring 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from Bell Textron in the United States as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s airpower capabilities and modernise its fleet.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led a NAF delegation to Bell Textron’s facility in Amarillo, Texas, where a beam-signing ceremony was held to mark progress on the helicopter programme.
The development forms part of the Nigeria–United States defence cooperation programme and the Federal Government’s wider efforts to equip the Armed Forces with additional platforms to respond to current and emerging security threats.
The production programme is being carried out under the US Foreign Military Sales arrangement. Bell has been contracted to manufacture and deliver 12 AH-1Z Viper aircraft to Nigeria, alongside engineering, programme management and logistics support. NAF says acquisition will strengthen airpower
Speaking during the ceremony, Aneke described the acquisition as an important development in the Air Force’s efforts to build a more capable and mission-ready service.
“The acquisition of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters represents an important milestone in our continuing efforts to build a more capable, professional and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force,” he said.
Aneke said the programme aligns with his command philosophy of maintaining a highly motivated and professional force capable of delivering airpower in coordination with ground forces to support national security objectives.
He also stressed the need for newly acquired military platforms to translate into improved operational effectiveness rather than simply increasing the number of assets available to the service.
Viper designed for combat operations
The AH-1Z Viper is an attack helicopter designed for missions including armed reconnaissance and close air support. Its planned induction will provide the NAF with a dedicated attack-helicopter capability as the service expands its air assets for security operations.
The NAF said the programme is intended to strengthen its ability to support ground forces during counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations.
The acquisition is also part of a wider effort to renew Nigeria’s military aviation fleet, which includes combat aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial systems.

The ceremony marked the beginning of production of the first Viper aircraft destined for the Nigerian Air Force.
Bell said the aircraft would provide multi-mission capabilities, including the use of precision-guided and unguided weapons, while being designed to operate from forward locations with a reduced logistical footprint. (Textron Investor Relations)
Defence cooperation between Nigeria and US
Aneke expressed appreciation to the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other stakeholders involved in the Viper programme.
“Sustained defence cooperation, technical collaboration and capability development remain essential to the successful implementation of the programme,” he said.
The NAF said the continued partnership would support the effective integration of the helicopters and help develop the technical and operational capabilities required to maintain and operate the new aircraft.
The 12 AH-1Z Vipers are expected to become part of Nigeria’s expanding attack-helicopter fleet as the country continues efforts to strengthen its response to security challenges. (thenigerianvoice.com)
