New York City Public Schools is preparing to introduce a broad restriction on student-facing artificial intelligence tools for children from 2-K through eighth grade during the 2026–2027 school year.
The policy will affect the nation’s largest public school system, covering more than half a million students and limiting the use of generative AI among younger learners.
The school district is expected to release the new guidelines as the academic year gets underway. The restrictions will apply to students ranging from preschool through middle school.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city would place a moratorium on generative AI for students covered by the policy as officials work to understand the technology’s effects.
Speaking to ABC News, Mamdani said the city would spend the next year “studying the impacts of this technology.”
The move comes as educators, parents and policymakers continue to debate the role of artificial intelligence in schools and how the rapidly developing technology should be introduced into classrooms.
