Canadian Elcora and gold lion to Start mining manganese in Morocco

 Elcora, a Canada-based mining company focused on extracting electric car (EV) batteries metals, announced on Tuesday that it is preparing a ‘comprehensive’ extraction plan for manganese under the “Atlas Fox Deposit” license in Morocco.

In a statement, Elcora explains that the company is currently in the process of preparing for extraction operations, “following the very positive Manganese Ore lab test results.” 

“The Atlas Fox Deposit had been mined until the mid-fifties when the French rule in Morocco came to an end leaving on-site about 40 extracted Manganese ore piles and numerous surface veins and pits,” the statement adds.

In the same statement, Elcora said that, after negotiations with mining company Gold Lion, it will retain 100% ownership of the manganese concession. In September, Gold Lion bought a 25% stake in the manganese permit under a $75,000 cash deal among other terms.

Commenting on the news, Elcora’s CEO Troy Grant said, “Given the latest Manganese Ore test results, it was important for us to retain 100% of the Atlas Lion Deposit and build additional shareholders’ value.”

Grant said Eclora’s main focus is “to start producing ore as soon as possible and the Mining Plan along with bringing the necessary equipment are important steps towards it.” The CEO explained that the local Moroccan team is “diligently working on getting the last Government requirements with the objective to start production before the end of 2022.” Elcora is operating in Morocco through its subsidiary Ermazon SARL.

First Electric Car will be Manufactured at Tanger plant in 2023

Renault Tanger, a French car manufacturer, announced today plans to launch its first electric car manufacturing line in 2023.

The company made the announcement on Tuesday during a ceremony celebrating the 10th anniversary of the company in Morocco, Renault  said in a statement.

Since its launch in 2012, the Tangier plant has produced an accumulated figure of 2.3 million vehicles supplying more than 70 markets around the world.

With the new line, the company aims to produce 17,000 electric vehicles annually. The new model is set to comprise 50% recycled material and to be 95% recyclable by the end of its life, added the company’s statement.

Expressing their satisfaction at doing business in Morocco, Renault noted that their positive experience in the North African country is a “statement” to the potential success of the “Made in Morocco” label.

Speaking at Tuesday’s ceremony, Morocco’s Minister of Trade and Industry, Ryad Mezzour, said that Renault’s 10th anniversary in Morocco is also a celebration of “a successful partnership” between Morocco and the Renault Group. 

Mezzour further added that the partnership is strategic and promising, stressing: “Renault is once again consolidating its role as a driving force in the development of the automotive industry in Morocco, an industry that is making a steady transition towards electrification and sustainable mobility.”

The minister added, “The launch of production of the first electric vehicle on the Tangier production lines illustrates the attractiveness of the Moroccan industrial enterprise. We have the means and skills to achieve our goal and meet our challenge.” 

Earlier this week, Morocco’s industry minister said that the country is aiming to build on its successful experience in car manufacturing and become a regional industrial hub for electric car manufacturers.

First electric car by Toyota gets recalled over wheels issue

Toyota has offered to buy back its bZ4X electric cars from owners after it issued a recall for the vehicles over a risk that their wheels might fall off.

The Japanese auto giant first notified customers of the unusual severe wearing of the hub bolts that hold the car’s wheels in place in late june 2022.

“After low-mileage use, all of the hub bolts on the wheel can loosen to the point where the wheel can detach from the vehicle,” the company warned.

“If a wheel detaches from the vehicle while driving, it could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Toyota does not yet know the reason for the wearing of the hub bolts or under which driving patterns it could occur.

The company instructed owners not to drive their vehicles and has offered a range of remedies while it investigates and attempts to resolve the issue.

The remedies include a free loaner vehicle and covering fuel costs while Toyota keeps their car in storage for repair.

Toyota will also extend its New Vehicle Limited Warranty on the bZ4X with the time during which the owner is unable to drive the vehicle.

In addition, Toyota’s complimentary 12-month public charging programme for the bZ4X has also been extended to 31 December 2024.

For those who remained dissatisfied, Toyota offered to repurchase the vehicles.

The bz4X is the company’s first mass-produced fully-electric car to be sold globally and is also set to become the company’s first fully-electric offering in South Africa.

Although the recall impacts all the models, the company has only sold 2,700 models, and many of these had not yet been delivered to customers by the time of the recall.

The recall also impacts the Subaru Solterra, which is built on the same platform, but none of these models have been sold yet.

Apple enlists Lamborghini veteran to work on its self-driving electric car

Apple Inc. has enlisted one of Lamborghini’s top car-development managers in a sign that it’s stepping up work on a self-driving electric vehicle, according to people with knowledge of the situation.

The company hired Luigi Taraborrelli, a 20-year veteran of the Italian carmaker, to help lead the design of Apple’s future vehicle, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter isn’t public.

Taraborrelli was most recently Lamborghini’s head of chassis and vehicle dynamics.

The move is another signal that Apple is committed to producing a car following years of setbacks and upheaval. With his experience, Taraborrelli becomes one of the most senior managers on Apple’s EV team and brings some exotic-car panache to the effort.

The executive worked on Lamborghini models such as the Urus, Huracan and Aventador, in addition to more limited models like the Huracan Sterrato off-road vehicle and Asterion concept car.

He oversaw Lamborghini’s chassis development, as well as areas such as handling, suspensions, steering, brakes and rims, according to his LinkedIn profile.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the hire. Earlier this year, Apple tapped a 31-year veteran of Ford Motor Co. to lead its vehicle-safety effort. 

Last year, it hired Ulrich Kranz, the former chief of struggling electric-car maker Canoo Inc. and former leader of BMW’s electric-car business. Before that, Apple enlisted former Tesla Inc. Autopilot chief Stuart Bowers to work on self-driving technology.

The Apple project includes hundreds of former engineers from Tesla and other car companies, including Rivian Automotive Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo, Volvo Car AB and Mercedes-Benz Group AG. It also has former senior design executives on staff from Tesla, McLaren, Porsche and Aston Martin.

The company is aiming to introduce aiming to introduce a car around 2025 with a design that lets riders face each other in a limousine-like interior, Bloomberg has reported.

Apple has grand ambitions to create a car without a steering wheel or pedals, relying instead on fully autonomous technology, though many team members and industry watchers doubt such a move is possible on its current schedule.

Even with the recent hires, the team has lost key talent, including the former head of the project, Doug Field, and artificial intelligence specialist Ian Goodfellow.

Field had joined Apple in 2018 after leading vehicle programs at Tesla. He left the iPhone maker to join Ford after about three years, a relatively short period for an Apple executive in charge of a major initiative.

The car project is currently run by Kevin Lynch, who also oversees the company’s Apple Watch and health software teams, and John Giannandrea, the company’s head of machine learning.

Apple has been working on an electric car since at least 2014, but the project has been plagued by turmoil, including leadership turnover, strategy changes and layoffs.

Apple and Lamborghini have some history together. In 2020, the carmaker released an Apple-based augmented reality feature to help people preview the Huracan EVO RWD Spyder.

At the time, Apple’s head of marketing said the company “cares deeply” about Lamborghini.
