Emirates to double it’s daily Flights Between Nairobi And Dubai by December 15

Emirates is set to double its daily flights between Dubai and Nairobi starting December 15 ahead of the Christmas season when bookings surge.

The airline will fully restore its services to pre-pandemic levels by bringing back all fourteen flights on the Dubai–Kenya route, providing enhanced connectivity to Dubai and onwards to destinations on Emirates’ global network of over 130 destinations.

The four additional weekly flights will complement its existing services and grow Emirates’ seats to over 10,000 a week between the airline’s global Dubai hub and the capital city of Nairobi.

Similar to the current daily service between Dubai and Kenya, the added frequencies will be operated with Emirates’ Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, offering eight private suites in First Class, 42 lie-flat seats in Business Class and 310 spacious seats in Economy Class.

From 15 December, outbound flight EK 719 will depart from Dubai at 0935 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, arriving in Nairobi at 13:45hrs. The return service, EK 720 will depart from Nairobi on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 15:40 hrs and arrive in Dubai at 21:40 hrs.

Similarly, Emirates flight EK 721 will depart Dubai on Wednesday at 02:10 hrs and arrive in Dubai at 06:20 hrs. The return service, EK 722 will depart Nairobi on Wednesday at 23:55 hrs and arrive in Dubai the next day 06:00 hrs.

The new double daily service will provide an important tourism boost to Kenya, safely connecting leisure travellers from the US, points across Europe, Israel, Brazil, and the Middle East to Kenya via a convenient stop in Dubai.

Apart from the increased passenger capacity, the new flights will provide around 80 tones of cargo capacity per flight, giving businesses and traders more opportunities to export fresh flowers, produce such as fruits, vegetables, and meat in addition to opening trade lanes for essential imports like mobile phones, garments, footwear and household goods.

Emirates shuts down flight operations in Nigeria

Emirates Airlines has announced the suspension of its flight operations to Nigeria effective September 1, 2022.

The flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) disclosed this in a statement on Thursday, citing the inability to repatriate its earnings in foreign exchange from Nigeria.

Recall that the airline had earlier limited its flight into Nigeria over the inability to repatriate its $85 million from Nigeria.

Last month, Emirates asked Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, to support the repatriation of its revenue, amounting to $85 million. Nigeria is facing a forex exchange crisis and this has also affected the nation’s local currency — Naira — to depreciate against the dollar.

The airline said the suspension would “limit further losses and reduce the impact on its operational costs that continue to accumulate in the Nigerian market”.

“Therefore, Emirates has taken the difficult decision to suspend all flights to and from Nigeria, effective 1 September 2022, to limit further losses and impact on our operational costs that continue to accumulate in the market,” the airline said.

“We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused to our customers, however, the circumstances are beyond our control at this stage. We will be working to help impacted customers make alternative travel arrangements wherever possible.

“Should there be any positive developments in the coming days regarding Emirates’ blocked funds in Nigeria, we remain keen to serve Nigeria, and our operations provide much-needed connectivity for Nigerian travellers, providing access to trade and tourism opportunities to Dubai, and to our broader network of over 130 destinations.”

In May, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) lamented the inability of foreign airlines to repatriate about $450 million in earnings

Of the amount, IATA said Nigeria alone is holding about $450 million due to a shortfall of foreign exchange (FX) and a dwindling reserve.

Emirates set to reduce operations in Nigeria over $85m blocked fund

Emirates Airlines has said it will reduce its flight operations to Nigeria due to its inability to repatriate about $85 million in revenue. 

The airline made this known in a letter addressed to Hadi Sirika, minister of aviation, dated July 22, 2020, and signed by Sheik Majid Al Mualla, Emirates airline’s divisional senior vice-president (DSVP), international affairs. 

Last month, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said Nigeria was withholding revenue worth about $450 million earned by foreign airlines operating in the country. 

Emirates said the planned reductions in its operations in Nigeria would take effect from August 15, 2022. 

It added that flights would be reduced from 11 per week to 7 per week at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA).

“We have had no choice but to take this action, to mitigate the continued losses Emirates is experiencing as a result of funds being blocked in Nigeria,” it said. 

“As of July 2022, Emirates has US$ 85 million of funds awaiting repatriation from Nigeria. This figure has been rising by more than $US 10 million every month, as the ongoing operational costs of our 11 weekly flights to Lagos and 5 to Abuja continue to accumulate.”

It said the funds are urgently needed to meet its operational costs and maintain the commercial viability of its services to Nigeria. 

“We simply cannot continue to operate at the current level in the face of mounting losses, especially in the challenging post-COVID-19 climate. 

Emirates did try to stem the losses by proposing to pay for fuel in Nigeria in Nairas, which would have at least reduced one element of our ongoing costs, however, this request was denied by the supplier,” the statement reads. 

“This means that not only are Emirates’ revenues accumulating, we also have to send hard currency into Nigeria to sustain our own operation. Meanwhile, our revenues are out of reach, and not even earning credit interest.

“Your Excellency, this is not a decision we have taken lightly. Indeed, we have made every effort to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to find a solution to this issue. Our Senior Vice-President met with the Deputy Governor of the CBN in May and followed up on the meeting by letter to the Governor himself the following month, however no positive response was received.

“Meetings were also held with Emirates’ own bank in Nigeria and in collaboration with IATA to discuss improving FX allocation, but with limited success. Despite our considerable efforts, the situation continues to deteriorate. We are now in the unfortunate position of having to cut flights, to mitigate against further losses going forward.”

Emirates added the issue was primarily a financial constraint, urging the Nigerian government to support.

“We are confident that your valuable involvement would make a real difference in improving this very difficult situation. Should there be any positive development in the coming days, we will, of course, re-evaluate this decision,” it said.
