President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria has moved beyond a difficult period and should now focus on the opportunities ahead rather than dwelling on past challenges.
Tinubu made the remarks on Thursday during his nationwide broadcast to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day anniversary.
Reflecting on the country’s economic challenges and the reforms implemented by his administration, the President said Nigeria had corrected its course and was now positioned to pursue greater economic prosperity.
“We have passed through our own Red Sea. This is not the time to look back. Let us go forward together, with faith in ourselves, faith in our country, and faith that the sacrifices we have made will yield their reward,” Tinubu said.
He described the future he envisions for Nigeria as one characterised by greater prosperity and opportunities for citizens.
“The Promised Land before us is a Nigeria of abundance and opportunity; a nation where prosperity is broadly shared, where every child can dream beyond the circumstances of his birth, and where our country’s immense promise is finally reflected in the lives of our people.”
Tinubu said the government’s direction was clear and that the country should remain focused on achieving its long-term goals.
“Our destination is in sight. Our foundations are strong. Our direction is clear. So let us go forward. No looking back.”
The President also acknowledged the contribution of Nigerians who continue to work through the country’s challenges, describing ordinary citizens as an important source of the nation’s strength.
He said the journey ahead would still require sacrifices but expressed confidence that Nigerians could build a stronger future together.
“The road ahead will still demand much from us. But we travel it now with firm footing, a clear direction and renewed hope in our collective future,” he added.
Tinubu’s Independence Day message comes as his administration continues to defend its economic reform programme, including measures aimed at changing the structure of Nigeria’s economy and improving the country’s long-term fiscal position.
The President urged Nigerians to maintain faith in the country and look towards the opportunities that could emerge from the ongoing changes rather than returning to the difficulties of the past.
