Social media site Twitter saw a major outage affecting users globally on Thursday – its first major incident of this kind since February.

The outage lasted for close to an hour, and was Twitter was impacted in multiple countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico and Italy, with nearly 30 000 reported incidents.

The outage was reported on Downdetecter.com but it was not immediately clear what caused it.

Twitter did not immediately confirm the outage, but according to an update on its page was “investigating a possible outage” linked to an “unresolved incident”.

For most users the problem appears to be resolved.

Twitter shares had plunged on Monday, however, after billionaire Elon Musk announced the withdrawal of his $44 billion bid to take over the company, AFP reported. This paves the way for a possible legal battle after a contentious process thus far.

Shares in the social media giant ended down 11.3% at $32.65 in the first session after Musk said late on Friday that he intended to drop the takeover plan.

On Sunday night, Musk – whose bid to take over Twitter had followed some controversy about his own usage of the medium – followed up with a series mocking tweets after the company said it would sue him to force the deal through.
