The House of Representatives has extended the implementation period for the capital component of Nigeria’s 2025 budget from September 30 to December 31, 2026.
The extension was approved during plenary on Tuesday following a motion moved by Julius Ihonvbere, Leader of the House.
Ihonvbere said the extension was necessary because the capital component of the 2025 budget had not been fully implemented, citing prevailing economic difficulties.
He noted that allowing the implementation period to expire on September 30 could affect the execution of capital projects and programmes that had already been approved.
The extension will allow Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of the Federal Government to continue implementing outstanding projects and programmes contained in the 2025 budget.
The N54.99 trillion 2025 Appropriation Act was passed by the National Assembly on February 13, 2025, and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on February 28. The budget was originally designed to run until December 31, 2025.
However, delays in implementing the capital component have led lawmakers to extend its lifespan several times.
The first extension was approved in December 2025, moving the deadline to March 31, 2026. It was later extended to June 30 and then September 30, 2026.
With the latest approval, the capital component of the 2025 budget will remain open until December 31, 2026.
This means a budget originally scheduled to end in December 2025 will have its capital implementation period extended by an additional 12 months.
