The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has set up an ad hoc committee to investigate multiple taxation and overlapping revenue collection affecting businesses and residents across the state.
The move followed a matter of public importance raised by Hon. Daniel Oga Ogazi, who said business operators were facing multiple tax demands that were increasing financial pressure on them.
Ogazi cited the case of a private school proprietor who reportedly complained of paying as many as 23 different taxes.
He urged the Assembly to direct the Nasarawa State Revenue Service and other relevant authorities to address the issue and prevent unnecessary duplication of taxes and levies.
Assembly orders investigation
Speaker of the House, Danladi Jatau, said multiple taxation was negatively affecting businesses and residents and urged the state government to fully implement the State Revenue Harmonisation Law.
The Speaker subsequently constituted an ad hoc committee to determine the number of consultants collecting revenue in the state and assess how effectively the revenue harmonisation law is being implemented.
The committee is chaired by Hon. Hudu A. Hudu, with Daniel Ogazi, Solomon Yakubu-Akwashiki, Jonah Ali-Dizaho and Dr Hajara Danyaro-Ibrahim as members. Aluma Joseph will serve as secretary.
The committee was also directed to investigate revenue collection around the Mararaba axis of Karu Local Government Area and surrounding communities, particularly whether businesses and residents in border areas are paying revenue to Nasarawa State or another jurisdiction.
The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
Lawmakers call for harmonised taxes
Other lawmakers supported the investigation, warning that multiple taxation could discourage investment, increase the cost of doing business and worsen economic hardship for residents.
They called on state and local authorities to comply fully with the Revenue Harmonisation Law and eliminate unnecessary duplication in tax and revenue collection.
Nasarawa had already introduced revenue reforms in 2025 through the Revenue Administration Law and Harmonised Taxes and Levies Law, aimed at creating a more unified system for tax and non-tax revenue collection.
