Algerian-Senegalese Economic Cooperation: Enormous Potential to Be Exploited

Economic and trade relations between Algeria and Senegal are further strengthened. Senegal’s ambassador to Algeria, Serigne Dieye, said that “we will have to deepen this cooperation by acting on the strengths of each country.” “Following the guidelines of the Presidents of the two countries, there have been acts in the framework of the promotion of bilateral relations both at the political and economic level,” says Mr. Dieye.

“We are pleased to see more private sector involvement. There is the imminent opening of an Algerian bank in Dakar, the organization of an Algerian product fair in Senegal and of course the importance attached to the Algiers-Dakar maritime line for increasing trade”, he added on the sidelines of a meeting on “partnership routes and increasing the volume of trade between Algeria and Senegal” organized on Monday in Algiers by the Algerian Organization for Trade and Social Investment.

The Senegalese diplomat argued that Algeria can only bring good things to his country, given its experience and its great economic potential. In this context, he emphasized the importance of increasing trade between the two countries. “They are now less than $20 million. That’s very inadequate. We want to double the volume. This is an objective that both countries can achieve,” he said.

He said it was important to give a new impetus to bilateral relations that could be strengthened in the pharmaceutical, building materials, ceramics and cement sectors, emphasizing the value of further strengthening African cooperation.

The meeting was marked by the signing of numerous trade and cooperation agreements in various strategic sectors of common interest. It was also announced that an office of the Algerian Organization for Trade and Social Investment would be set up in Senegal. It was agreed that Algerian operators would be moved to Senegal in December.
