Arsenal have made a strong early statement in their Premier League title defence, claiming maximum points from their opening two matches without conceding a goal.
Bukayo Saka scored the decisive goal as Arsenal defeated Aston Villa 1-0 at Villa Park on Monday, extending the Gunners’ perfect start to the new campaign.
The England international struck in the second half to secure Arsenal’s second consecutive victory following their 3-0 opening-day triumph over Coventry.
The result will further strengthen Arsenal’s confidence as they look to defend their Premier League crown. Mikel Arteta’s team have collected all six available points while keeping two clean sheets.
The victory also gave Arteta an ideal way to celebrate his 250th league match in charge of Arsenal.
The Gunners boss kept faith with the same starting XI that comfortably defeated Coventry 10 days earlier.
Arsenal’s squad depth was once again on display late in the match when England centre-back Ezri Konsa made his Arsenal debut against his former club. Konsa joined the Gunners from Villa in a £51 million ($69 million) transfer on August 21.
Arsenal Face Chelsea in First Major Test
Arsenal will face their first major examination of the season on Sunday when they welcome London rivals Chelsea, who have also won their opening two league matches.
Arteta could potentially have another new attacking option available for the clash, with Arsenal continuing to monitor unsettled Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
The only setback for Arsenal on Monday was a possible injury to Declan Rice, who was forced to limp off during the closing stages.
For Aston Villa, however, frustration is mounting after suffering their second successive defeat.
Unai Emery’s side followed up their disappointing campaign opener with another loss after being thrashed 4-0 by Brighton in their first match.
Villa have endured a remarkable summer of departures, partly because of the need to remain compliant with Premier League financial regulations. The club have seen several key players leave, including Konsa, Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Lucas Digne and Youri Tielemans.
The scale of the changes has left Villa looking far removed from the energetic side that ended their 30-year trophy drought last season.
Emery now faces the difficult task of rebuilding the team while attempting to restore their competitiveness.
The club’s rebuilding process was also evident around Villa Park on Monday, with one section of the stadium closed to supporters because of ongoing construction work aimed at increasing capacity.
Arsenal Find Their Cutting Edge
Villa handed debuts to several new arrivals, including Nicolas Jackson, who joined from Chelsea as Watkins’ replacement in attack, and Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who arrived from Parma.
Villa made a lively start, with winger Emiliano Buendia rattling the crossbar with a powerful effort and immediately putting Arsenal under pressure.
The visitors gradually settled into the contest, however, and began creating opportunities of their own. Villa defender Pau Torres produced an excellent block to prevent Christos Tzolis from converting Saka’s cross.
Arsenal also appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty late in the first half after Riccardo Calafiori went down following contact from Torres.
With Arsenal struggling to find a decisive touch in front of goal, Arteta made a change at half-time, replacing Tzolis with Eberechi Eze.
The substitution quickly had an effect. Victor Lindelof was forced into a crucial late challenge to prevent Kai Havertz from finishing Rice’s pass.
Martin Odegaard then came close from a free-kick, curling his effort narrowly wide after VAR overturned an initial penalty decision involving Ian Maatsen and Saka. The review determined that Maatsen’s foul on Saka had occurred just outside the penalty area.
Villa could only delay the inevitable, though, as Arsenal finally broke the deadlock in the 59th minute.
Eze played a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Calafiori, who raced into the Villa box before sending a low cross across goal. Saka reacted quickest, turning the ball home from close range to give Arsenal the lead.
Suzuki subsequently denied Havertz with a strong save, while Konsa entered the game for his Arsenal debut to a mixture of boos and applause from the Villa supporters.
With Konsa helping Arsenal deal with Villa’s attacking threat in the closing stages, the Gunners held firm to secure a hard-earned victory.
The 1-0 result means Arsenal begin the season with two wins, two clean sheets and plenty of momentum ahead of their highly anticipated meeting with Chelsea.
