Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has temporarily stepped away from Belgium’s national team, opting to miss the upcoming Nations League campaign while keeping the door open for a return.
Courtois Takes Break From Belgium Duty
The 34-year-old goalkeeper confirmed that he will not feature for Belgium during the Nations League campaign.
Courtois said the decision followed discussions with new Belgium coach Mark van Bommel and was influenced by his desire to focus on his fitness and club performances.
The Real Madrid goalkeeper is not retiring from international football.
Instead, he plans to make himself available again for Belgium’s Euro 2028 qualifying campaign.
Goalkeeper Faces Fight for Starting Spot
Courtois acknowledged that returning to the national team does not guarantee him a starting position.
He said Van Bommel told him he could not promise him the No. 1 spot if another goalkeeper performs well during the Nations League.
Courtois said he remains determined to compete for his place and prove that he can regain the position.
Courtois Misses Nations League Games
Belgium are scheduled to face France, Italy and Turkey during the Nations League campaign.
Courtois previously indicated after the 2026 World Cup that he wanted a period of rest from international football.
His decision comes after a physically demanding period with Real Madrid and Belgium.
