First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has called for stronger cooperation among federal, state and local governments as well as traditional and religious institutions to tackle Nigeria’s maternal and newborn mortality crisis.
She made the call in Abuja during the flag-off of the Federal Government’s distribution of 215,000 MAMA kits to vulnerable pregnant women and families nationwide.
FG Expands Support for Pregnant Women
Alongside the maternal kits, the government is distributing 40,000 maternal food-support packs and 40,000 sets of newborn clothing.
The initiative is being implemented under the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
Tinubu said the interventions were designed to encourage women, particularly those from economically disadvantaged communities, to attend antenatal clinics and remain connected to healthcare services before and after childbirth.
“This occasion represents a further step towards ensuring that every Nigerian child has a healthy start in life and that no woman loses her life while giving birth,” she said.
Government Targets 2.9 Million Beneficiaries
The Federal Government plans to expand the programme to more local government areas where access to maternal healthcare remains low.
The initiative is expected to reach 2.9 million pregnant women and families by 2028, as the government seeks to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes nationwide.
