Safaricom Ethiopia launches commercial services in Addis Ababa, ending the half-century old telecom monopoly that was under the control of Ethiopia telecom.

At a press briefing held at the Hayatt Regency Hotel today, Safaricom’s managers announced that residents of Addis Ababa can now get telecom services from Safaricom beginning today.

The “07” network in Addis Ababa is offering customers 4G data, voice, and SMS services between Safaricom Ethiopia and Ethiopia Telecom customers; international calls worldwide; and affordable phones for purchase, said the company in a statement released today.

William Ruto, the new president of Kenya, has arrived in Addis Ababa today. A part of his plan during the visit is to attend the grand launching ceremony of Safaricom. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and other senior officials will be present during the ceremony.
