5th Edition of YouthConnekt Africa summit ends in Rwanda.

The 5th edition of the youth connect summit ended in Kigali, Rwanda Saturday (Oct. 15) after 3 days of conferences, masterclasses and networking sessions.

Thousands of young innovators and leaders from all across the world attended the event to discuss different ways to promote growth and advancement for the youth of the African continent.

This year’s summit was being held under the theme “Accelerating investments in Youth: Resilient Youth, Resilient Africa”. 

It brought together participants from 30 African countries to discuss and chart a way forward on how to involve the youth in Africa’s trade, health, climate resilience and financing, technology, skilling for the future among other topics.

Ritah Karen, a student, was very much inspired by the sessions: “I feel very important being a youth, I learned from the Deputy President of Kenya that there is no elevator to success but we should take the steps, and I also learned that hard work without purpose, and discipline, nothing can ever be fulfilled.”

According to findings by the United Nations Development Programs, UNDP, 42% of Young people in Africa don’t have access to the funding needed to run their business.

They therefore fall to get that funding. Sometimes their ideas remain on the back of their brains and they are unable to take their dreams to the market and reach their customers.

Speaking to Africanews, entrepreneur Arnold Nyendwa shared his thoughts on investments in Youth.

“Accelerating investment is about taking decisive decisions, it’s about taking action, because when you look at the problems that are affecting Africa, the solutions are there. Young people are now creating solutions, but there is no support system.”

High level delegates including President Paul Kagame stressed that the youth are a resilient movement that will contribute to a prosperous 2063 agenda for a better Africa. 

The African Union (AU)’s 2063 agenda is the continent’s framework which aims to deliver on goals for inclusive and sustainable development and accorfing to the AU, it is a manifestation of the “pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress and collective prosperity”.

African Union hails landmark Russia-Ukraine grain deal

The African Union (AU) on Saturday hailed a landmark deal between Ukraine and Russia that will allow Kyiv to resume exports of grain through the Black Sea and relieve a global food crisis.

Ukraine’s farms are a major source of grain for the world market, in particular in the Middle East and Africa, where food supplies are critically tight.

Cereal prices in the world’s poorest continent have surged because of the slump in exports, sharpening the impact of conflict and climate change and sparking fears of social unrest.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomes the signing by Russia and Ukraine of agreements,” a statement said, praising Senegalese leader and AU chair Macky Sall “for having called for the urgent need for the resumption of cereals from Ukraine and Russia to global markets as made to President Vladimir Putin during a joint AU mission to Sochi” in early June.

Ukraine and Russia and two of the world’s largest grain producers.

But Ukrainian mines laid across the Black Sea to avert an amphibious assault, as well as Russian warships, have blocked exports from Ukraine, leaving up to 25 million tonnes of wheat and other grain in danger of rotting in ports and silos.

Sall thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who oversaw the signing ceremony in Istanbul on Friday, as well as presidents Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine.

“This was the objective of the mission I led in Sochi on June 3,” Sall tweeted.

The International Rescue Committee, which helps people affected by humanitarian crises, also welcomed the accord, saying countries in East Africa relied “on Russia and Ukraine for over 90 percent of their wheat imports”.

“The lifting of these blockades will go some way in easing the extreme hunger that over 18 million people in East Africa are facing, with three million already facing catastrophic hunger conditions,” Shashwat Saraf, IRC’s East Africa emergency director, said.

Guinea to move to civilian rule in three years, says Head of Guinea’s military government.

Guinea’s military Head of government has announced the country will return to civilian rule after a 39-month transition period. Speaking on television, Col Mamady Doumbouya, said the proposal would now be put to Guinea’s parliament. His army ousted the elected president in a coup last year a move many Guineans initially welcomed. But there has been growing discontent as the military junta failed to hand over power to civilian rule.

The announcement came after the regional bloc of West African nations, Ecowas, set last Monday as a deadline for the army to give its timeline – or face immediate sanctions. The deadline was missed but the junta asked for more time and said it was considering a transition period of between 18 and 52 months. On Saturday, Col Doumbouya said the 39-month period – three years and three months – was the “median proposal”.

Guinea’s National Transition Council (CNT), an 80-member body set up after the coup to act as a parliament, is also tasked with setting a date for the country’s next election – but is yet to do so. Col Doumbouya has promised that no-one taking part in the interim government, including himself, will be allowed to stand in future elections that will determine the next civilian government.

In September 2021, the army overthrew and detained president Alpha Conde, accusing him of rampant corruption and human rights abuses. Mr Condé had become increasingly unpopular after he changed the constitution so he could stand for a third term as president.

A former French legionnaire, Col Doumbouya was sworn in as Guinea’s interim president the following month and promised to form a new “union” government with civilian leaders within weeks – but failed to do so. Many Guineans saw the coup as a chance for a fresh start, and crowds were chanting the military leader’s name in the street. However the UN, African Union and Ecowas condemned the military takeover and demanded immediate return to civilian rule.

A series of coups both failed and successful have rocked West Africa in recent years. The most recent was in Guinea – Bissau which failed and left several people dead. There have been two military takeovers in Mali and a failed attempt in Niger.
