Egypt Ghana Trade Push Ahead of Ghana’s 2027 AU Chair

by Radarr Africa

Egypt Ghana trade ties are set to deepen, with both countries signalling a push for stronger investment links as Ghana prepares to chair the African Union in 2027.

What happened

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama in New El-Alamein on 4 October, on the sidelines of the 8th African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting. Mr Al-Sisi affirmed Egypt’s commitment to close cooperation with Ghana during its upcoming chairmanship, according to Egypt Today.

Mr Mahama said Ghana wanted to lift trade and investment flows in priority sectors where Egypt has extensive expertise. He also praised the capabilities of Egyptian companies and their contribution to Ghana’s development efforts.

Why it matters

Trade between the two countries has been growing. Figures reported earlier by African Mining Market show exchange rising from $78 million in 2020 to $270 million in 2023, with Ghanaian firms entering the Egyptian market in mining, real estate and electrical panels. A closer relationship during Ghana’s AU chairmanship could help turn political goodwill into deals.

The Alamein meetings also touched on how Africa funds its own development. Daily News Egypt reported that African leaders plan to launch an Alamein Investment Platform by 2027 to help close the funding gap at the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD).

What to watch

Watch for signed agreements on investment protection and double taxation, which both governments had earlier signalled interest in, and for details of how the Alamein Investment Platform will be structured and funded.
