Taiwan has urged the international community to promote greater inclusiveness within the United Nations and create more opportunities for its meaningful participation in UN activities.
Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Lin Chia-lung, made the appeal in a statement titled “Restoring Trust: Taiwan’s Rightful Place in the Free World,” which was made available to journalists on Tuesday.
Lin said efforts to restore public confidence in the United Nations should begin with ensuring that members of the international community are treated fairly and justly.
“Ensuring Taiwan’s meaningful participation in the United Nations is therefore essential to building a more inclusive, secure, resilient, and rules-based international order,” he said.
According to Lin, allowing Taiwan to participate more fully in international institutions could strengthen collective security, economic and technological resilience, and global efforts to counter authoritarian pressure.
“The free world needs Taiwan, and a stronger, more credible United Nations needs Taiwan’s meaningful participation,” Lin said.
He noted that, despite Taiwan’s exclusion from the UN system, the island remained committed to making constructive contributions to the international community.
Lin argued that efforts to reshape the global order would remain incomplete as long as what he described as a constructive and trustworthy member continued to be excluded.
He also raised concerns about increasing pressure on the rules-based international system, saying authoritarian states were attempting to weaken existing safeguards and influence international rules to advance their own interests.
“Even the fundamental principles of peaceful settlement of disputes and prohibition against the threat or use of force, which are enshrined in the United Nations Charter, have been openly challenged and flagrantly flaunted,” he said.
The minister described the international community as being at a critical crossroads, stressing the need to protect international law and preserve global peace and security.
“Either we act together to uphold justice, defend the rule of law, and maintain peace and security, or we watch the world order steadily crumble away, taking freedom, self-determination, and democracy with it,” Lin said.
He pointed to the Indo-Pacific as one of the regions where threats to peace and stability have become particularly visible.
Lin also said Taiwan supports efforts to rebuild trust in the United Nations and manage institutional changes, objectives he associated with the incoming president of the 81st UN General Assembly, Khalilur Rahman.
“Taiwan shares these objectives and stands ready to help realise them,” he said.
The minister maintained that stronger international cooperation with Taiwan could benefit the global community, particularly in areas such as security, technology, supply-chain resilience and democratic cooperation.
