Traffic congestion along the troubled Benin-Agbor Road has started to ease following the commencement of remedial works on some damaged sections of the highway.
The improvement comes about a week after Works Minister David Umahi inspected the road, where severe gridlock around the bypass axis had left motorists spending hours on the route.
Despite the easing of traffic, several sections of the road remain badly damaged, forcing motorists to navigate uneven and deteriorated portions of the highway.
The Benin-Asaba Expressway Concession Company (BAECC), the road’s concessionaire, has begun carrying out remedial work on some of the failed sections, providing temporary relief for road users.
Motorists Still Face Difficult Road Conditions
Chairman of the Ikpoba-Okha Youth Forum, Kingsley Osemwengie, said traffic conditions had improved significantly compared with the previous week, when motorists were reportedly stuck for hours due to the congestion.
However, he noted that the underlying road problems had not been fully addressed, with several bad spots still making travel difficult.
Osemwengie called for sustained intervention across the affected areas and urged the concessionaire to use the current reduction in rainfall to begin permanent construction work.
He said relying mainly on temporary repairs would not provide a lasting solution to the deteriorating road conditions.
Dust Raises Additional Concerns
Meanwhile, motorists and residents continue to face clouds of dust as vehicles move across the unpaved and damaged sections.
The dust has reduced visibility along parts of the route and affected surrounding communities, while also raising concerns about possible health impacts.
With traffic now moving more freely, road users are calling for the remedial works to be followed by comprehensive rehabilitation to ensure safer and smoother movement along the Benin-Agbor corridor.
