Former Anambra State governor and National Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi has blamed Nigeria’s political leadership for many of the challenges facing the country.
Obi made the remarks on Sunday while speaking at Koinonia Global, hosted by Apostle Joshua Selman.
The former governor said Nigeria itself was not the problem, arguing that poor leadership and the actions of politicians were responsible for many of the difficulties experienced by citizens.
“I believe that people like you are the ones keeping our country. The only thing I can ask all of you who are gathered here, because I know he’s praying for the country, is that you remember us, the politicians, in your prayers,” Obi said.
“We are the problem of the country. There’s nothing wrong with Nigeria. What is wrong in Nigeria is the leadership, the politicians God created in this country.”
Obi Calls for Better Use of Public Funds
Obi urged the congregation to pray for political leaders to develop the commitment to use public resources for the benefit of Nigerians.
“Let God touch our hearts to use public money for public good. Let God touch us to stop stealing. That is why people are suffering here,” he said.
According to Obi, Nigeria has enough natural and economic resources to significantly improve the lives of its citizens if the country’s wealth is properly managed and invested.
“If we use the wealth of this nation and invest it, it will go a long way. So remember us in your prayers,” he added.
‘It Is Leadership’
Drawing from his experiences travelling to different countries, Obi said he had seen how effective leadership and functioning systems could produce better outcomes.
“I’ve been to so many countries of the world. And I’ve seen things work in other nations. It is leadership,” he said.
The former governor also encouraged Nigerians to pray for all political leaders rather than supporting one group while condemning another.
“Don’t say one is good, the other one is bad. All of us, remember all of us in your prayers, because the problem of the country can be solved. I assure you of that,” he said.
Obi’s comments come as Nigeria continues to debate the role of political leadership, public accountability and the management of the country’s resources in addressing its economic and social challenges.
