The controversy surrounding the 2026 West African Examinations Council results has taken a new turn following an invitation by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre to a WAEC staff member, Olanrewaju Fadehan.
Fadehan was asked to appear before the centre in Abuja on Wednesday over an alleged case of cyberstalking and criminal defamation.
The development comes shortly after the Lagos State High Court restrained Fadehan from publishing or circulating alleged defamatory statements concerning WAEC and its Director-General, Dr Amos Dangut.
The police invitation, signed by the Director of the NPF-NCCC, AIG Akaninyene Ezima, directed Fadehan to report to the centre at 10 am on Wednesday for questioning over the alleged offences.
Reacting to the developments, Fadehan confirmed that he had received the court documents and was aware of the interim injunction.
“They’ve even done that already. At least, they sent me a court paper yesterday (Monday). That one is an interim injunction that I should not post anything any longer,” he said.
On the police invitation, he added, “They’re taking me to the cybercrime centre in Abuja. Tomorrow (Wednesday), I’m supposed to appear before them.”
Court Restricts Further Publications
On Monday, Justice Yetunde Adesanya issued an interim order in Suit No. LD/ADR/6656/2026, restraining Fadehan from “publishing, broadcasting, circulating or disseminating” any “defamatory, maligning and/or injurious falsehood” relating to WAEC, its examinations, results and certificates, or Dangut’s “character and/or integrity.”
The restriction covers video, audio, written and other forms of publication across various platforms, including YouTube and WhatsApp.
The order is expected to “abate after seven (7) days” unless it is renewed by the court.
WAEC and Dangut are seeking N500m in general damages for libel, N300m in aggravated and exemplary damages, and N25m in costs, bringing their total claim to N825m.
They are also asking the court to compel Fadehan to retract the alleged defamatory publications, issue a public apology and permanently remove the materials from all platforms.
WAEC Official Raises Concerns Over Examination Results
Fadehan, who is the Head of Examinations at WAEC’s office covering Anambra State, had raised concerns about the recently released 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results in a series of viral videos.
He called for a review of the results, citing alleged irregularities and concerns over the conduct of the examination.
Fadehan also alleged financial impropriety within the council’s management, raising issues involving the supply of calculators, students’ identification cards and charges imposed on candidates and other people seeking WAEC services.
He further claimed that some candidates were not given appropriate calculators during the examination, alleging that the situation contributed to poor performance in Mathematics and other calculation-based subjects.
Following his concerns, Fadehan petitioned the WAEC Board, the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examining Bodies, as well as the Minister of Education.
He alleged that instead of addressing the issues he raised, the council subjected him to disciplinary proceedings and subsequently placed him on interdiction.
WAEC Lawyers Accuse Fadehan of Defamation
In separate correspondence to Fadehan, WAEC’s lawyers, Union Attorneys, alleged that he released several videos attacking the examination council and its Director-General.
The lawyers cited publications including “Tyranny in WAEC, Nigeria: Dangut must go,” “WAEC: My alleged offence and the overbearing sanctions,” “WAEC’s MND: Petition to ASF, National Assembly and Minister for Education plus appeal,” and “Anomalies in WAEC – Series 1: I won’t wait.”
They also alleged that Fadehan later released another video titled “Dangut is a thief,” describing the publications as containing “inaccurate information and reckless statements.”
According to the lawyers, the publications continued despite a cease-and-desist letter dated August 24, 2026.
WAEC Denies Allegations
Responding to the viral videos, WAEC, through its spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina, accused Fadehan of spreading false information and sensational materials against the council.
The examination body also alleged that Fadehan was involved with some staff members in the alleged misappropriation and attempted concealment of hundreds of litres of diesel from an underground tank at its Awka office.
WAEC said Fadehan began making what it described as unsubstantiated allegations against the council after serving a four-week suspension.
“It is important to also note that Mr Fadehan is still a staff member of the council and his employment has not been determined.
“He has published that his employment has been determined while continuing to earn salaries from the council. His allegations have been investigated at various levels and found to be false. He has been spreading falsehoods and sensational materials to spite the council,” WAEC stated.
Fadehan Disputes Fuel Allegations
However, speaking with The PUNCH on Tuesday, Fadehan rejected the allegations connected to the fuel shortage controversy.
He said an internal panel investigated the matter and concluded that no one stole the fuel, claiming the shortage was caused by leakage.
“The panel resolved that nobody stole anything,” he said.
Fadehan also maintained that the fuel controversy was separate from the matter that led to his current interdiction, insisting that his interdiction was connected to allegations of defamation.
“So, it was based on the issue of defamation now that I was put on interdiction. It has nothing to do with fuel.
“The fuel issue is gone. The issue of fuel is being brought up when I raised the issue of a calculator that was not given to the candidate. He now set up a panel for me. The same Dangut set up a panel for me, and the query of that panel reads that I defamed him,” he said.
Fadehan also denied being resentful over the disciplinary measures taken against him, saying he had appealed the sanctions.
“I’m not bitter. I’ve appealed what they did. So I’m not bitter,” he said.
Concerns Over 2026 WAEC Results
Fadehan had earlier alleged in a now-viral video that candidates who took the computer-based version of the examination were particularly affected by the issues he raised.
He claimed that the problems became more apparent around the time the results were released. According to him, the results were initially expected between August 3 and 5, 2026, while WAEC had traditionally released results on Mondays.
He further alleged that rather than addressing his concerns, he was subjected to disciplinary proceedings and eventually placed on interdiction.
The latest police invitation and court order have now added another layer to the growing dispute between Fadehan and WAEC over the examination results, internal disciplinary proceedings and allegations involving the council’s management.
