Lecturers at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of the full August 2026 salary owed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The ASUU chapter of the university announced the industrial action on Monday, September 7, 2026, following a congress where members resolved to withdraw their services.
The decision was contained in a press statement signed by the Chairperson of ASUU-UNIZIK, Innocent Nubia, and the Secretary, Osita Nnajiofor.
According to the union, the action is in compliance with the standing resolution of the ASUU National Executive Council (NEC) on the non-payment or delay of salaries.
The union said the resolution empowers its branches to withdraw their services when salaries remain unpaid after the third day of the following month.
“ASUU-UNIZIK Branch held a Congress today, Monday, September 7, 2026, and resolved to withdraw her services in compliance with the standing Resolution of ASUU National Executive Council on non-payment of salaries,” the statement read in part.
The union said the university had yet to pay the complete August salary to its members, describing the situation as frustrating and unacceptable.
It added that the incomplete payment had occurred repeatedly, making the latest development more than the third time members had experienced such delays.
“The sole reason for this action is the non-payment of the complete salary of August 2026,” the union stated.
ASUU-UNIZIK called on the university authorities and the Visitor to the institution, President Bola Tinubu, to urgently intervene and ensure the outstanding portions of the August salary are fully paid.
The union also urged the authorities to prevent a recurrence of the situation.
The Congress resolution directed that the withdrawal of services would continue until the complete August 2026 salary had been paid to all affected members.
The development means that academic and other university activities involving ASUU-UNIZIK members will remain suspended until the outstanding salaries are fully paid.
When contacted for a reaction, the Director of Information and Public Relations of the university declined to comment on the development, simply stating, “No comment.”
