The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to strengthen national security and create a safer environment for Nigerians living abroad who wish to visit and reconnect with their homeland, Minister of Defence General Christopher Musa (retd.) has said.
Musa gave the assurance during an interactive meeting with members of the Nigerian community in Angola. The engagement took place on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Luanda, Angola.
The Defence Minister thanked members of the Nigerian community in Angola for maintaining a cordial relationship with the country’s diplomatic mission.
He also reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to addressing security threats across the country and ensuring greater safety for citizens.
According to Musa, the government is working to increase the manpower, resources and operational capacity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies.
“Every sector is receiving targeted interventions to enhance our national security framework,” General Musa was quoted as saying in a statement signed by his Special Assistant (Media), Leah Katung-Babatunde.
He noted that some of Nigeria’s security challenges are linked to instability across the Sahel region, which can have spillover effects across the country’s borders.
“Some of our ongoing challenges stem from regional instability in the Sahel, which trickles across our borders. However, comprehensive border management measures are actively being implemented to curb these incursions.”
Musa also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to using accurate and reliable data as part of its national security planning and broader development strategies.
He assured Nigerians that efforts to achieve sustainable peace and stability remain ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to supporting Nigerians abroad.
Dabiri-Erewa assured members of the diaspora community that NiDCOM remains available to address their welfare concerns and strengthen opportunities that can contribute to Nigeria’s development and shared prosperity.
The Nigerian delegation to the AU Summit in Luanda was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON, who represented President Bola Tinubu.
The engagement provided an opportunity for government officials to hear directly from Nigerians living in Angola, address their concerns and offer feedback on issues affecting the diaspora community.
