The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) have introduced a new verification arrangement that allows candidates seeking admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions to pay a one-off fee of ₦4,000 for the verification of their O’Level results.
The new policy is expected to ease the financial and administrative burden on admission seekers who have previously had to verify their academic credentials multiple times during the admission process.
In a joint statement signed by WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, on Tuesday, the two bodies said the initiative was designed to prioritise candidates’ interests by reducing unnecessary costs, minimising administrative stress and simplifying the admission process while maintaining the integrity and security of academic records.
Under the new arrangement, candidates whose admissions are regulated by JAMB will only need to verify their WAEC results once through JAMB. The outcome of the verification will then be made available to the relevant tertiary institution.
The ₦4,000 fee must be paid exclusively through the designated JAMB Verification Service platform. Candidates have been advised not to make verification payments directly to individual institutions.
Tertiary institutions have also been directed to use the verified results provided by JAMB for admission screening, processing and other related administrative purposes. As a result, institutions are not allowed to request additional payments from candidates to verify the same WAEC result again.
The policy is the outcome of a series of meetings and consultations between JAMB and WAEC aimed at making the O’Level verification process more efficient while reducing the financial and logistical challenges faced by admission seekers.
WAEC has authorised JAMB to share verification outcomes with relevant tertiary institutions for admission-related purposes.
“This arrangement is designed to ensure that candidates who have successfully verified their WASSCE O’ Level result through the Verification Service platform will not be required to repeat the same verification exercise,” the bodies said.
The initiative will also allow candidates to complete the verification process from the comfort of their homes or any location with internet access. This is expected to reduce the need for repeated trips to tertiary institutions or JAMB-approved Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres.
JAMB and WAEC therefore urged candidates to make use of the new arrangement by completing their WASSCE O’Level verification once through the JAMB-provided platform. Once verified, the result will be made available to the institution where the candidate is seeking admission.
