NDC vice-presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has condemned the reported attack on Peter Obi’s convoy in Benue State, calling for those responsible to be identified and prosecuted.
Kwankwaso Calls Incident a Threat to Democracy
Kwankwaso said he was deeply concerned by the incident, alleging that people were deliberately mobilised to block Obi’s convoy and prevent him from entering Makurdi.
He described the development as a setback for Nigeria’s democracy and stressed that every citizen has a constitutional right to freedom of movement.
NDC Candidate’s Convoy Blocked
Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, was reportedly travelling towards Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area when his convoy was stopped along the Gboko-Makurdi route.
He was heading to the community to sympathise with families affected by the June 2025 attack that claimed hundreds of lives. Reports said suspected thugs blocked the road, forcing the convoy to turn back.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, while the Benue State Government said it was not aware of Obi’s visit. The state police command confirmed it knew about the movement and said it was investigating why the convoy was blocked.
Kwankwaso Demands Prosecution
Kwankwaso urged the Benue State Government to investigate the incident, identify those behind the alleged attack and ensure they face prosecution.
He also called for adequate protection for Obi and his entourage during their movements in the state.
Calls on Tinubu, International Community
The former Kano governor appealed to President Bola Tinubu to caution state governors against actions that could undermine democratic freedoms.
He also urged diplomatic missions and election observers to take note of the incident and encourage Nigerian authorities to protect opposition politicians and uphold the rule of law ahead of the 2027 elections.
