Lagos Begins 35-Day Traffic Diversion on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road

by Radarr Africa

The Lagos State Government has commenced a 35-day rehabilitation project on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, introducing traffic diversions to reduce congestion and maintain movement along the busy corridor connecting Victoria Island, Lagos Island and Lekki.

The rehabilitation began on Monday, October 19, 2026, and covers the stretch between the Adetokunbo Ademola Road/Civic Centre junction and Samuel Manuwa Street/BJ junction.

Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, said a contraflow arrangement had been introduced on the Lagos-bound carriageway, between Samuel Manuwa Street and Adetokunbo Ademola Road/Civic Centre, while work continues on the opposite lane.

Motorists have been advised to use designated alternative routes and follow instructions from traffic officials throughout the construction period.

Alternative routes for motorists

The state government has outlined alternative routes for different journeys to help ease traffic around the affected section.

Motorists travelling from Bonny Camp or Falomo towards Civic Centre and Lekki are advised to use Adeyemo Alakija Street near Muri Okunola Park, connect to Adeola Hopewell Street and Akinbo Savage Street, and proceed through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street towards School Corner near Black Diamond and Sandfield.

Those travelling from Falomo towards Akin Adesola Street can use the IMB route to access the Coastal Road entrance through Adetokunbo Ademola Road. From there, they can proceed to Eko Hotel Roundabout before connecting to Ajose Adeogun and Ligali streets towards Black Diamond School Corner.

Motorists leaving Bonny Camp are advised to use Ahmadu Bello Way to reach Eko Hotel Roundabout through the IMB/Coastal Road entrance, then continue through the designated streets towards Black Diamond School Corner.

For motorists travelling from Eko Hotel through Adetokunbo Ademola Road towards Civic Centre, the recommended diversion is through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street and School Corner towards Sandfield.

Vehicles exiting through the 1004 gate will also be directed to turn left or make a U-turn in front of the gate before proceeding through Bishop Aboyade Cole Street.

Meanwhile, motorists travelling from Eko Hotel towards Falomo and Ikoyi are advised to use Sanusi Fafunwa Street to connect to Akin Adesola Street and continue towards the ramp bridge.

LASTMA to manage traffic

The Lagos State Government said officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be deployed to coordinate vehicle movement, manage congestion and minimise disruption during the repairs.

Osiyemi urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead, obey traffic officials and cooperate with the temporary traffic arrangements.

The rehabilitation is expected to last 35 days. Road users travelling through Victoria Island and surrounding areas are advised to allow additional time for their journeys and familiarise themselves with the alternative routes before setting out.
