South African-born jurist Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace, strengthen international law and ensure accountability for serious human rights violations.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on Friday, October 9, recognising Pillay’s decades-long contribution to international justice and the development of legal institutions that hold individuals and governments accountable for violations of international law.
Pillay, 85, previously served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She has also held judicial positions at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Pillay’s career in international justice
Born in Durban, South Africa, to a family of Indian Tamil origin, Pillay began her legal career during apartheid, when racial discrimination shaped access to justice and public institutions.
In 1967, she became the first woman to establish a law practice in Natal. She later became the first non-white woman appointed to South Africa’s High Court.
Her work at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda helped advance the recognition of rape and sexual violence as crimes that could constitute genocide and crimes against humanity.
The Nobel Committee said her career demonstrates the importance of international legal institutions in resolving conflicts, protecting human rights and holding perpetrators of serious crimes accountable.

Role in the Gaza investigation
Pillay also chaired the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel.
In 2025, the commission concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza and accused senior Israeli officials of incitement to genocide. Israel rejected the findings, describing the report as unacceptable.
Her involvement in the investigation has placed her at the centre of international debate over accountability, the application of international law and the role of judicial institutions in conflicts.
Nobel Prize highlights international law
The Nobel Committee said Pillay’s recognition underscores the importance of maintaining an international legal order at a time when courts and international institutions face political pressure.
The award includes 12 million Swedish kronor and is scheduled to be presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
Pillay’s award brings renewed attention to the role of international justice in addressing war crimes, genocide and human rights abuses, as well as the challenges of ensuring that legal principles are applied consistently across conflicts.
