Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay will miss Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal after undergoing a successful procedure to treat a heart arrhythmia.
The 29-year-old Scotland international underwent a planned ablation procedure at Spire Manchester Hospital after being diagnosed last week with a mild and benign heart rhythm disorder, according to Reuters.
Napoli confirmed that the procedure was successful, adding that McTominay will undergo a rest period of about two weeks before returning to training.
“McTominay will observe a rest period of around two weeks before resuming training,” the Italian club said in a statement.
The former Manchester United midfielder will consequently miss Napoli’s Champions League opener against Arsenal. He was also absent from Saturday’s 3-2 Serie A defeat to defending champions Inter Milan.
McTominay is expected to miss Napoli’s upcoming league matches against Bologna and Fiorentina before resuming full training during the next international break.
Since joining Napoli from Manchester United, McTominay has established himself as an important member of the Italian side. His latest setback, however, comes as the club begins its Champions League campaign.
Napoli will host Arsenal on Wednesday in their opening league-phase fixture, with McTominay expected to focus on his recovery before returning to training in approximately two weeks.
