Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has said the 2027 election will be different from 2023 because his camp trusted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) too easily last time.
Obi Faults INEC, Vows Independent Monitoring
Speaking on Arise Television, Obi said he has proof the Mahmood Yakubu-led INEC worked for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.
“In 2023, we took things for granted. We believed INEC,” he said.
He announced plans for an independent results-monitoring system that would collect figures from polling units and compare them with INEC’s official count, insisting this would not amount to setting up a parallel electoral commission.
Obi also questioned President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, alleging he has not spent three consecutive nights in any state outside Lagos and Abuja since taking office, and criticised his foreign holidays.
“The Nigerian President must spend his vacation in Nigeria. We cannot continue with this nonsense,” he said.
He said he still believes he won the 2023 election but has chosen to focus on 2027, ruled out paying ransom to kidnappers, and said he would serve only one term if elected.
