Iran’s top security official on Tuesday dismissed the possibility of immediate negotiations with the United States, following comments by President Donald Trump indicating he would be willing to restart discussions concerning the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
“Don’t get distracted by the U.S. president’s mixed signals — from ‘no negotiations’ to ‘we’re ready to talk’,” said Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in a post on X.
Rezaei stressed that Iran would not return to the negotiating table unless its conditions are fulfilled.
“The stakes around oil and the straits have changed. Damage control won’t stop what’s coming. No talks until Iran’s conditions are met. Period!” he added.
His remarks came a day after Trump signaled that Washington remained open to engaging with Tehran, despite previously suggesting that it was not yet the right time to pursue an agreement aimed at ending the conflict.
“The failing Nation of Iran wants to make a deal, quickly and badly. I will determine whether or not the U.S.A. will choose to engage — The concept of which we are open to,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Iran has consistently maintained that any path toward ending the conflict and easing restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz must include key demands, notably compensation for war-related damages and the removal of international sanctions.
