Kenya has recorded at least 19 deaths from Mpox since the outbreak was confirmed in the country three months ago, according to a statement issued Monday by the Ministry of Health.
The ministry said seven counties have been identified as high-risk areas for Mpox because of their location along major transport routes and proximity to international border crossings.
Kenya has reported 1,298 confirmed Mpox cases so far. Mombasa has recorded the highest number with 452 cases, followed by Nairobi with 320.
Busia, Makueni, Kiambu, Kilifi and Nakuru have also been classified as high-risk counties, while the outbreak has spread to more than 40 counties across the country.
Ministry Urges Vigilance as Mpox Spreads
The Ministry of Health warned that Mpox remains a threat despite ongoing efforts to control its spread.
It called for sustained public awareness campaigns, stronger disease surveillance and increased screening at county border crossings to help identify and contain new infections.
The ministry said it is also maintaining surveillance for other infectious diseases as part of efforts to strengthen Kenya’s preparedness for emerging health threats.
Kenya Strengthens Ebola Preparedness
Although Kenya has not recorded any confirmed Ebola cases, health authorities said measures are in place to respond to suspected infections and prevent the virus from entering the country.
The ministry said it will continue strengthening surveillance, vaccination, public education and coordination among health agencies.
Authorities are also maintaining efforts to contain the Mpox outbreak while preparing for other potential infectious disease threats.
