The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of the eight-month accumulated Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance to eligible non-academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.
The development follows the government’s earlier release of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) covering January to August 2026 for academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, had announced in September that arrangements were underway to release the corresponding allowance for non-academic staff, with funding expected to become available within weeks.
The payment is part of the Federal Government’s implementation of its agreements with unions representing workers in the tertiary education sector.
New welfare package for non-academic staff
The government had earlier approved an enhanced welfare package for non-teaching staff in federal universities following discussions with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU).
The revised package, effective from January 1, 2026, includes a 35 percent increase in hazard allowances across eligible salary grades and new or increased responsibility allowances for various categories of staff.
The package also includes increases in laboratory hazard allowances, field trip, teaching practice, industrial supervision and Students’ Work Experience Programme allowances.
The Provision Tools Allowance was also merged into the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance under the revised structure.
The Federal Government said the measures are aimed at improving staff welfare and supporting stability across the tertiary education sector.
