The Federal Government has paid the naira equivalent of $100,000 to each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic victory at the 2025 FIB Women’s Afrobasket.
The National Sports Commission also confirmed that each official of the team received the naira equivalent of $50,000 as part of the Presidential Reward approved for the team.
According to the commission, the accounts of the players and officials were credited on September 9, 2026, with all beneficiaries confirming receipt of the payments.
D’Tigress secured a record fifth consecutive FIB Women’s Afrobasket title and their seventh championship overall in 2025.
The NSC said the latest payment marked the completion of all components of the rewards promised to the players and officials by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, on Wednesday, the commission said the Presidential Rewards included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national hon ours and cash payments.
“With the payment, the entire presidential rewards promised to each member of the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR comprising a 3-Bedroom flat in Abuja, national hon ours of OON and Naira equivalent of $USD 100,000 to players and $USD 50,000 to officials have been fully redeemed and completed,” the statement said.
The commission recalled that the players and officials had earlier received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, alongside certificates of national hon ours, in February 2026 during the FIB World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France.
The NSC said the documents were duly signed by President Tinubu.
It added that the cash component of the reward was paid following the team’s participation in the FIB Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The commission also provided an update on the Presidential Rewards promised to the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team.
According to the NSC, the Falcons had already received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national hon ours during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026.
The commission said the cash component of the Falcons’ reward was expected to be paid before their next official engagements.
The Super Falcons were promised the same cash rewards, with each player set to receive the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official would receive $50,000.
The NSC said the rewards form part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve the welfare of Nigerian athletes and recognise their achievements on the international stage.
The statement said, “This unprecedented rewards to the players and athletes by the Federal Government of Nigeria is in alignment with the Renewed Hope initiative and Shared Prosperity agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR which places athletes’ welfare and appropriate rewards top on the priority list.”
The commission also thanked President Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports, saying his policies had strengthened its reform efforts and contributed to plans to build a sustainable sports economy.
It expressed appreciation to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation for their roles in implementing the reward package.
According to the NSC, the collaboration between the various government agencies ensured that the Presidential Rewards were implemented “in record time within the due process requirements.”
