The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, Sola Adigun, has called for stronger cooperation among teachers, parents and government to promote students’ development and improve the education sector.
Adigun also urged teachers across the country to remain committed to their profession and work towards becoming effective educators who can make a lasting difference in the lives of their students.
The ASUSS national president made the call in Ado Ekiti on Thursday during an interactive multicast organized by the Ekiti State Bureau of Community Communications.
Describing teachers as guardians and mentors, Adigun said they work alongside parents and government to support and nurture students throughout their time in school.
He also urged parents to take their responsibilities seriously by providing their children with adequate care, guidance and support.
He said, “The students, on their part, should remain focused on their education, work hard to achieve their goals and shun cultism and other social vices.
“The shared responsibility of raising children is essential to addressing challenges in the education sector.”
Adigun commended the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, for what he described as various interventions aimed at improving education in the state.
He said the governor had contributed to the development of the sector, particularly through measures targeting teachers’ welfare, school infrastructure, timely payment of salaries and students’ welfare.
The ASUSS president also praised the state government for increasing the funds available to workers under its car and housing loan scheme, describing the initiative as an important measure towards improving teachers’ welfare.
He said, “The provision of buses to convey teachers and students to various schools in Ekiti State, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidy, has also provided significant relief to the workers. The transportation service has been provided free of charge.”
While acknowledging the progress recorded, Adigun said there was still a need for additional government intervention in some areas.
He stressed, “There is the need for continuous training and retraining of teachers to enhance their professional capacity and improve the quality of education.”
The ASUSS president further called for sustained improvements in the payment of leave bonuses for teachers and other workers.
Adigun called for “continuity of improved payment of leave bonuses to teachers and other workers. This will complement the achievements recorded so far and ensure better welfare and working conditions for teachers in the state.”
He maintained that stronger collaboration among teachers, parents and government would help address some of the challenges facing the education sector while creating a better environment for students to succeed.
